Although it still seems surreal, we must unfortunately announce the passing of our beloved Melissa S. Evelyn. Her death has shattered our hearts and lives. Melissa, affectionately known as Mel, Melly or Lissy, unexpectedly passed away earlier this month. The world has lost and incredibly driven force with a pure soul, and infectious smile.
When we lose someone suddenly, specifically someone so vibrant, and young, we are never prepared for what happens next. We have contemplated the best way to honor Melissa’s spirit, and hope to uplift her family through prayer, actions and financial support.
As the first aspiring physician in her family, Mel was the true definition of strength and compassion. She was wholeheartedly committed to not only making a better life for her family, but to making a difference in the lives of all those who were blessed to meet her. Mel attended the BS/MD program at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, and matched to Albany Medical College for clinical clerkships. She was set to graduate as a medical doctor in 2020. Mel was a physical embodiment of the word compassion. She was known for her loving leadership and constant fraternity. She served as the confidant to many and consistently aimed to help others. Mel was prepared to change the world with her grace, brilliance, and humility. She will be sorely missed by us all.
Mel’s spirit lives on through her mother, sister, and nephew. With permission from her family, we have started this campaign to raise money for the medical and memorial expenses that will be incurred as a result of this tragedy. Unfortunately, the Evelyn family has already suffered the loss of their father within the past year, and watching them experience another tragedy has been unbearable to witness. We therefore created this fund to assist with the financial burden, but more importantly, to help provide Mel’s family the opportunity to focus on their healing during this extremely difficult emotional time. Any contribution is welcome, with no amount too small.
Although Mel has left us way too soon, our hope is to keep her spirit alive my emanating Mel’s daily actions. We encourage you all to be kind to one another, help those who are in need, and proceed through life with an optimistic and loving spirit, just as Mel did each and every day. Knowing and loving Melissa has been an absolute privilege, and we will forever love and honor her. Rest in Power our shining star.
