Hi, my name is Natalie. I’m Melissa’s niece. On May 7th, Melissa was shot by her neighbor and is currently in critical condition. We are asking for your prayers, well wishes and support.

If you know Melissa, you know what a kind, giving person she is. You know that she is also a single mother who works hard for her children and pets.

Melissa has always found love in her heart to open her home to friends and family when they need a place to stay. She’s that compassionate person who takes in stray and orphaned animals. She has not had an easy life. She had a heart transplant as a teen. She’s also experienced years of hardship, but it’s only made her more loving and loyal.

She was shot in her own backyard, sustaining damage to her abdomen and hand. The shot to her stomach damaged her colon and spleen and shattered several ribs (which the surgeons removed). She had extensive surgery and is currently on a ventilator.

She also will require reconstructive hand surgery. The bullet tore off quite a bit of her thumb and index finger. Ordinarily, they would amputate, but because the thumb is so important, the doctors will try to save it.

We do not know what lies ahead, but we do know that, at the least, she will need months of rehabilitation and care. During that time, we want her to be able to focus on her recovery and family…not what’s bound to be staggering medical and household bills. And as for her kids, we want to make sure that they have everything they need, because that’s what she'll worry about most.
