My name is Dr. Teri Carlson, from Boulder, CO. My friend Melissa, a full time self-employed mother of 4 had an accident 3 weeks ago in route to the park with her 2 girls; Grace and Faith. Melissa went to the ER and subsequently underwent several major surgeries on the 18th to her left knee. After almost 8 hours of reconstructive surgery at the Stedman Clinic her surgeon told her she had a slow careful road to recovery that would begin in a wheelchair, and in about 6 months she could begin walking once again. Melissa is unable to work in her profession as a real estate agent until April of 2021 as a result of these restrictions.
This accident comes at the end of 4 very challenging years for Melissa. Due to previous medical injuries in 2016 and 2017, Melissa has faced hundreds of thousands in medical bills, some of which she is still paying off. Melissa sold her home of nearly 10 years where she raised her kids, sold her car, and cashed out savings, retirement and liquidated assets to pay off all the debts she could. Melissa moved to Longmont where she could afford to start again and remain in Boulder County where her kids go to school.
This accident isn't something Melissa can endure on her own. Melissa spent 23 of 24 hours a day in bed the first 2 weeks and now she spends most of her day in her wheelchair on the 1st level of her home, unable to perform every day functions on her own. Her mother flew from the East Coast to help her for the first 2 weeks post-surgery, but now her two daughters ages 10 and 14 are tasked with helping with what they can after their home schooling each day. Without a spouse, family or friends close by (closest is 30 minutes away), she is on her own the next 5 months and she needs our help.
Melissa has done so much for so many. Due to COVID-19 and limitations with contact, meals etc. are challenging and with her compromised immune system assume unnecessary risk. This Go Fund Me is being established to help pay for some of her expenses while she can't work during this difficult time.
