CON MAN steals couples savings $$$ on their anniversary!
Zac and Melissa have had a rough year like most of us in 2020. In addition to the pandemic, Zac has been out of work helping to care for his father who passed away earlier this year.
When the opportunity came along to buy an old beat up 1960 Volkswagon Bus truck thingy, called a Single Cab that Zac could fix and restore, a hobby he is passionate about, the couple planned to take the trip from Utah to Oregon on their anniversary weekend and drive the VW home together.
The deal was struck, and the Seller required advanced payment. Zac was hesitant, but had bought and sold classic cars in the past within the VW community and yes, he placed more trust there than he probably should've. Previously Zac had even sold a VW bus and the Buyer payed him in advance, and that guy actually walked away with a car. In addition to that the "Seller" was very communicative. There were no red flags or warning signs that this could be a scam.
Melissa pulled the money out of her savings and they wired it to this guy who was selling the car, he confirmed receipt and they headed to Oregon for their Anniversary Road Trip.
They got plane tickets and flew to Oregon! The "Seller" was still communicating with them AFTER they land in Portland, pushing his con.
Texting with them even after they got an Uber and headed to the address where they were to pick up the vehicle.
The Uber drops them at the house where the VW was supposedly waiting, luggage and all. He knocks on the door and the people who live in the house HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT! There is no old VW on the property. It was all an elaborate LIE designed to cheat and steal from them.
YES, they called the police, in Oregon and Utah!
YES, they called their bank!
YES, they called the bank they wired the money too!
YES, if you happen to be an expert in these matters and can help them get their money back some other way you should do it, because they have gotten nowhere with the proper authorities.
These screen shots are the story in Zac's own words. As you can see, sure, they made the best of a bad situation, and sure, Zac really loves his wife... but they are left with a little less faith in humanity and a lot less money. I started this gofundme to try and restore some of both for them.
I've known these two for a long time, they'd never ask for this and are as deserving of some kindness as anyone I know.
