Friends of Melody Johnson (Mongo),
Fitness Trainer, House Head, and friend. Maybe you have known her as a personal trainer at Fitness19, 359 Fit Gym, the Boll Family YMCA, or teaching fitness classes at Senior Centers and Youth Camps. You probably know her from ASE, 3 Chicks and a DJ, or on the dance floor at LIV / Mix, Como’s, and many House parties. If you’re a Polar Bear you know her from Highland Park Class of ’81.
After experiencing some muscle weakness and pain on her left side for a few days after the July 4 holiday, Mel went to urgent care where they took vitals and advised her to go to emergency. Mel was immediately admitted to the hospital and underwent a series of test including a standard CT Scan and MRI. The news was not good, the nausea, weakness, and pain are due to a brain tumor.
With that news on 7/6 everything has changed.
Mel is now under going tests and seeking the best treatment option from a Neurology team at the DMC. Until final treatment options are determined she has currently started several prescription medications and is not able to work, drive, etc. While Mel has medical insurance, there are out of pocket costs (i.e. deductible, co-pays) associated with her care. In addition, there is no disability coverage through her employers, leaving no income until she can return to work. At this point it’s pretty clear that she will be on medical leave for several weeks if not months as surgery is anticipated. That means no income for home expenses, mortgage, car note etc. This adds a financial strain to an already overwhelming situation.
If you know Mel, she is the life of the party, a positive inspiration, and really generous soul. She is proud, humble and handles her business. However, in this circumstance we (her friends) feel that it’s going to take a village. We ask if you can afford to contribute to Mel’s expenses, she and we will be forever grateful.
Mel is resting as best possible and thanks everyone for their prayers, well wishes and positive thoughts. We will keep you updated as she starts the journey to complete & restored health.
