Mrs. Elizabeth Newman Trevathan, 56, of Burlington, died Friday, January 13, 2017 at her home.
A native of Norlina, Elizabeth was the wife of Henry Trevathan and the daughter of the late Walter Baskerville Newman and the late Rebecca Rodwell Daniel Newman.
Elizabeth graduated in 1978 from Warren Academy where she was a cheerleader and basketball player. She attended Meredith College for two years before transferring to East Carolina and graduated in 1982 with a BSBA degree with a concentration in Finance.
Elizabeth stayed in Greenville and worked at North State Savings and Loan. While in Greenville, Elizabeth and her friend Mitzi Melton taught aerobics at the Greenville Athletic Club. Henry also worked there and Mitzi introduced them. Elizabeth married Henry on June 28, 1986.
Elizabeth and Henry moved to Raleigh where she worked at Planters Bank and the State Board of Dental Examiners. They moved to Hickory in 1992 where she worked as Office Manager for The Children's Health Clinic. While in Hickory her sons, Samuel Newman Trevathan and Barnes Turnage Trevathan, were born at Frye Regional Hospital.
Elizabeth and Henry settled in Burlington in 1996. Elizabeth stayed home raising her boys. She started with the NCAGD (North Carolina Academy of General Dentistry) in the early '90s and continued as Executive Director until her death.
When her boys began elementary school, Elizabeth volunteered at the school. She was around the school so much, she was hired as a teaching assistant. When the boys moved to Turrentine Middle School, she continued there as a teaching assistant.
She attended North Carolina A&T and received her Masters degree in Education in 2009. She continued to work as a Special Education Teacher at Turrentine until 2012, when she moved to Walter M. Williams High School and was an EC Teacher until taking leave in 2016.
Elizabeth continued to teach fitness classes at the Burlington YMCA, Alamance Country Club and Gold's Gym.
Elizabeth had been the NCAGD Executive Director for over 25 years. Moreover, She was very much the heart and soul of the organization. She will be greatly missed. Words cannot describe what she has meant to all of us in the NCAGD, and her impact extends far beyond our organization or even our state.
This GoFundMe account is set up to aid Elizabeth's husband Henry in covering Barnes and Sam's education expenses. Anyone who spent time with Elizabeth could see her light up when she spoke of her sons. They meant the world to her and the best way to honor Elizabeth and the love she showed everyone, is to help care for the boys she loved so dearly.
