On Christmas night Derian’s appendix ruptured. She was 17 weeks pregnant at the time and she wasn’t sure what was going on. Her and her husband Brancen went to the emergency room on the 26th after feeling like it could be her appendix. The ER doctor ordered an MRI but because the appendix was already ruptured they didn’t see any swelling and ended up sending them home with the diagnosis of: stomach flu and normal pregnancy pains.
They went home knowing the next morning they had a scheduled appointment with their midwife. When they got to the midwife appointment Derian was in so much pain she couldn’t walk. Brancen wheel chaired her into the appointment and the midwife checked out the baby. Baby looked fine but there was obviously something serious going on. She sent them back to the hospital and called a surgeon at the hospital to look at her appendix. The surgery ended up being much longer than expected due to the ruptured appendix.
They ended up having to stay in the hospital for a full week monitoring the baby, getting IV antibiotics, and watching the drain that was inserted the clear infection out of her stomach.
After being released from the hospital Derian was still on antibiotics and had to take a two more weeks off of work to heal, then Derian’s water broke unexpectedly at nearly 21 weeks into the pregnancy. They went back to the emergency room where they confirmed her water did break but they sent her back home on bedrest to try and keep the baby in for two or three or more weeks.
After a couple hours and more complications they ended up in the Utah valley labor and delivery room where they delivered their baby. Alvin Luka Webster was born January 21st, 2023 at 8:52pm. He died in the same minute he was born. He was perfect and healthy, right on pace to be born as a normal healthy baby. Derian’s preterm labor was caused by an infection from her ruptured appendix. Likely because there was so much time between the appendix rupturing and the surgery. Sad enough they confirmed that if the baby had come 2 weeks later he was healthy enough they could’ve have realistically kept him alive.
Now they are climbing steep mountains; dealing with the grief and depression of loosing their baby is the hardest. But they also have bills from the surgery and the delivery and funeral of their baby.
Derian and Brancen are really appreciative of all of the love and support they have been shown by friends and family and any donations you can give them at this time will also be greatly appreciated. Donations will be used for medical and funeral expenses.
