Memorial of Dr. Chirwa (25 Dec 1916 - 4 Jun 2004)

Dear Family/Friend,

 

The 4th of June 2022, will be the 18-year anniversary since our granddad, Dr Wellington Manowa Chirwa’s passing. Grandad was someone who was extremely passionate about educating the masses, and indeed educating children. In his honour, we, his grandchildren would like to hold a “Book Drive” - donating recyclable books to schools and universities in Malawi.

Around 1940 grandad became a teacher and later a headteacher in Zimbabwe and taught in London, with his aim to 'produce students who would achieve above average'. He was the founder and director of a charity, Malawi Contact Group, which later became Malawi Education and Water Foundation, from 1994 until it was dissolved in 2005, following his death. Through his charity he was dedicated to providing clean water and was committed to education. The charity was awarded 380,000 Euro by the European Commission in 1998. 

In the same year, upon the request of the University of Malawi, he organised and presented books and monetary donations to the university. 

 

The above history is a testament to our grandad’s dedication to education and his work in Malawi. On the 5th of August 2022, our family are holding a memorial celebration for grandad and we grandchildren hope to do what follows in his honour.

 

"The Book Drive"

 

We are holding a "Book Drive", by which we are asking friends and family and other potential donors to which this initiative may be referred, to donate recyclable books which have been used from kindergarten right through to University. There is also an option for monetary donations, which we will use to buy books to donate along with the recyclable book donations. We will then present the books to schools and/or universities in Malawi.

 

We are in a position to honour the life of our grandad, who cared immensely about facilitating access to education and in doing so, pay tribute to his legacy and the work that he did. We ask that you give what you have to help us with this.
