Donations to the family of June Onkundi PMHNP

June Onkundi was fatally stabbed while on duty by a patient on 10/18/2022 at an outpatient clinic where worked as a Psych Nurse Practioner. She was dedicated, compassionate, kind, and caring. She was also a mentor, wife, and mother. June would make any gloomy day to be a brighter one. Her voice and presence were magical to both staff and patients. The community has lost a great nurse.

North Carolina Nurses Association President Meka Ingram released a statement about Onkundi's death. We are heartbroken by the senseless death of our colleague and fellow NCNA member, June Onkundi," Ingram wrote. "Our prayers go out to her friends and family. She dedicated her life to helping others; we should all be proud of her positive impact on some of the most vulnerable patients. Her loss has shaken the nursing profession throughout North Carolina.

This week our WakeMed family mourns the loss of June Onkundi, PMHNP, RN. A WakeMed family member since 2018, June, was a valued and trusted member of the 1C Clinical Evaluation Area team and had a passion for working with those suffering from mental illness. Our thoughts are with her family, loved ones, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Celebrate her spirit and bravery as a mental health nurse.

Co-workers describe June as kind, always willing to help, smiling, and encouraging coworkers to further their education. June proactively checks on fellow nursing teams during her shift.

June has worked as Mental Health Nurse for years, and because of her passion for mental health, she went back to school to become a Psych Mental Health Nurse practitioner and graduated class of 2022. June obtained a specialty Psych Mental Health Nurse Certification ANA 2022. June is survived by four minor children. Please keep the family in your prayers.
