Unity Healing Program: Empowering African American Families

Tax deductible
The Family Counseling and Support Services program aims to provide culturally competent counseling and support services tailored to the unique challenges faced by African American families. Through individual, group, and family therapy sessions led by licensed therapists trained in culturally sensitive approaches, the program seeks to enhance family cohesion, improve communication, and promote overall well-being.

Goals:
  • Provide accessible and affordable counseling services to African American families in need, covering a percentage of therapy costs based on individuals' and families' income levels.
  • Address mental health disparities within the African American community.
  • Strengthen family relationships and support systems.
  • Increase awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues.
  • Empower families to navigate challenges and build resilience, with the overarching goal of preserving family unity and breaking free from historical patterns of disintegration.

Target Population:

The program will target African American families residing in Palm Beach, Miami and Broward County who may be experiencing challenges such as intergenerational trauma, racial discrimination, socioeconomic stressors, and barriers to accessing mental health care.

Services Offered:

Individual Counseling: Offer one-on-one therapy sessions with licensed therapists to address personal concerns, develop coping strategies, and promote self-awareness and growth.
Group Counseling: Facilitate group therapy sessions focused on topics such as parenting skills, stress management, grief and loss, and relationship dynamics.
Family Therapy: Conduct family therapy sessions to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen familial bonds.
Psychoeducation Workshops: Organize workshops and seminars on relevant topics such as mental health awareness, effective communication, conflict resolution, and self-care practices.
Support Groups: Establish peer support groups for parents, children, and adolescents to share experiences, receive encouragement, and learn from one another in a safe and supportive environment.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Increased access to mental health services for African American families.
  • Improved family functioning and communication.
  • Reduction in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
  • Enhanced coping skills and resilience among participants.
  • Greater awareness and understanding of mental health issues within the community.

Budget Breakdown:

  • Therapist Salaries: $140,000 per year (covering 2 therapists)
  • Counseling Materials and Supplies: $5,000 per year
  • Workshop and Event Expenses: $10,000 per event (covering venue rental, refreshments, etc.)
  • Outreach and Marketing Costs: $7,000 per year (including promotional materials, advertising, etc.)
  • Administrative Costs: $8,000 per year (covering overhead expenses)
  • Total Annual Budget: $170,000

Based on this, here's a breakdown of potential costs per family at a 100% coverage rate:

  • Number of Sessions per Week: 1-2 sessions
  • Duration of Therapy: 3-12 months

Given that therapy sessions are held 1-2 times per week, and the duration of therapy is 3-12 months, we can calculate the total cost per family for therapy as follows:

  • For 1 session per week for 3 months: $100/session * 12 weeks = $1,200
  • For 1 session per week for 12 months: $100/session * 48 weeks = $4,800
  • For 2 sessions per week for 3 months: $100/session * 24 weeks = $2,400
  • For 2 sessions per week for 12 months: $100/session * 96 weeks = $9,600

Now, let's calculate how many families can be supported with the given budget:

Total Annual Budget: $170,000
Maximum cost per family (2 sessions per week for 12 months): $9,600
Number of families supported = $170,000 / $9,600 ≈ 17.71

Expected Reach:

The program aims to serve approximately 100 African American families per year, providing direct counseling services to 200 individuals and indirect support to the broader community through workshops, support groups, and outreach initiatives.

By implementing the Family Counseling and Support Services program, Greater Horizon Foundation seeks to address the mental health needs of African American families, promote healing and resilience, and foster stronger, more resilient communities.
