Mercedes physiotherapist with Future Health Africa

Hi friends!

Thank you for taking the time to read about what I am about to embark upon!

Most if you know that I’ve been working as a physiotherapist for 18 years now, most recently at Bryanston School.

I absolutely love my job.

Having the opportunity to help people every single day is a real privilege.

I’d like to take this a step further and challenge myself as a clinician, by volunteering in Kenya to help those who would really benefit.

I have been lucky enough to be accepted onto the Trauma Team, volunteering for ‘Future Health Africa’ in January 2024. I am delighted that Bryanston has allowed me the time away from school to offer my skills to such a wonderful charity.

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of death and disability world-wide, particularly in Africa. Patients are often unable to access treatment due to lack of surgeons or the ability to pay for surgery.

The Trauma Team, made up of volunteers aims to reduce suffering, disability and poverty, particularly due to traumatic injuries, by undertaking surgical assessments and procedures on children and adults with the host team.

Knowledge and Skills exchange takes place through working together and learning together, side-by-side with Kenyan surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, orthopaedic technicians, radiographers and physiotherapists.

In partnership, the host hospital and the Trauma Team, work together towards creating and improving the Trauma service that the hospital is striving for.

I am raising funds to contribute to the charity directly to cover the costs of me being there, in the hope that I can play a small part to making a big difference to the lives of Kenyan adults and children.
