Merryn’s Cancer Battle

My name is Elise and Merryn is one of my very best friends. Her family is very important to us. Merryn was diagnosed with Stage 3B colon cancer, she underwent a surgery that lasted 4.5 hours to remove 10 inches of her colon and two masses that had grown through the wall of the colon. One was found to be a benign polyp and the other was found to be cancerous. With the cancer having grown outside of the colon and had begun to attach to other organs, they were able to remove the mass but they could not say for sure that they’d removed all of the cancer. They removed 16 enlarged lymph nodes, and were able to discern stage 3B from the findings of everything removed.

Course of treatment has begun rapidly, which means bills have already come piling in. Merryn will begin chemo for the next 6 months, and the bills will continue to come in.

Since the surgery, Merryn has been slow to get back on her feet and able to work. Due to the other procedures, this will continue to impact her ability to provide income to care for her family. She has made it her mission to tell her story and encourage people to move past the uncomfortable conversations and speak to your doctors truthfully and honestly as soon as anyone sees irregularities come about. Anyone who knows Merryn and Matthew (and their boys) - they know that these are the type of people who would give you the shirt off of their back, feed anyone at any time, and are always there for anyone. Their hearts are overwhelming with service, and the world could stand for more people like them.
