Liam Cook - Liver Transplant for OTC

Molly and Logan Cook welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Liam, into the world on March 1st. He was born seemingly healthy, but unfortunately, just hours after birth, things took a turn and Liam was rushed to the NICU. Extensive testing revealed an extremely elevated ammonia level. Due to the level of care and resources required to keep little Liam alive, he was transferred to Children's of Alabama, two hours away from Molly and Logan's home. He has since been treated with continuous dialysis, intubation, and extremely expensive medications to cleanse his blood of ammonia.

Genetic testing informed us that Liam has Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency. OTC deficiency is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the lack of the enzyme responsible for breaking down nitrogen in the body. The lack of the OTC enzyme results in excessive accumulation of nitrogen in the form of ammonia in the blood. This excess ammonia, which is a neurotoxin, travels to the central nervous system through the blood, and is typically fatal if uncured. As of now, the only existing cure for OTC deficiency is a liver transplant. Unfortunately, transplants come with a lot of risks, and cannot be done on babies as little as Liam. In the meantime, Molly and Logan have relocated to Birmingham, where they are slowly accumulating bills beyond the scope of their insurance coverage and basic living expenses.
