Developing Primary School Hand Washing Stations

Tanzania has more than 300 confirmed active Covid-19 cases as of May 9th. Now more than ever hand hygiene is extremely important but it’s very difficult for students at our Mango school to wash their hands because there aren’t enough sinks, the water supply is limited and there is often no soap.

We are in the middle of our journey to help these kids get the education they need. Our last couple of campaigns have gained enough support to build our first school blocks. Those have been the main milestones so far, now we need your help to allow these kids access clean water, essential to maintain hygiene and minimise exposure to bacteria and viruses.

We are counting on you now, and are launching a 4-week emergency appeal to accelerate our hand washing project. Your donation will pay for sinks, soap and awareness at our MANGO school, helping 320 children to stay healthy.

Supporting this campaign allows you to make a tangible grassroots-level difference to the fight against Coronavirus in Tanzania.

The hand washing stations will be connected to their own pipeline water harvesting tanks, so they have a reliable water supply and are less work to maintain. A station will have 14 taps, meaning many children can wash their hands at once. Using push-taps will conserve water, but also means that students don’t have to touch a potentially dirty tab once they have finished washing. Our design ensures that soap dispensers are in easy reach of everyone using the hand washing station. Each station will have 4 soap dispensers.

We need to raise $4,200 to install 2 hand washing stations, serving 320 children.

We will be using push-button soap dispensers because we have round that solid soap or soap in a bottle can go missing, or, as these hand washing stations are outside, dropped in the dust!

We are including 3 months of soap supplies in the budget.  Over the 3 months, we will be working with the school Water and Project Committees to explore ways in which the school can fund soap on an ongoing basis. But for now, it’s too urgent to wait for these plans to be realized, and your donations will provide soap during this vulnerable period.

Impact of hand washing station.

This hand washing program, will reduce student sickness-related-absenteeism by 90%. We are building on and learning from our 2019 experience to ensure that this project is as successful and impactful as possible.

What are the costs of the project?

A total cost of constructing two hand washing stations is $4,200.  

How will donations be used?

Since LESCOTA’s team consists only of non-paid volunteers, we will use all donations received to cover the costs  of setting up a two hand washing station.
