Rosie Needs Help!
Donation protected
Hi there and thank you for checking out Rosie's story!
Rosie is a stray pit bull found in Baltimore taking respite in the back of someone's yard under a pile of construction materials on Wednesday, 4/30. At first glance, it looked like she had not had food, water, or rest in at least a day. With the warmer weather this past week, we made sure to get her water ASAP and give her a few food options.
Her nipples were enlarged but there were no signs of any puppies. We assume that she gave birth and was dumped when the puppies were of age to be sold. With the tartar build up on her teeth, she looks to be about 3-4 years and we think she may have had a few litters.
My friend, Rachel, and I spent 4 hours earning her trust with high value treats. We approached her slowly and on her terms. She got up a few times to eat food and would immediately lay back down in the corner. She showed interest in a few McDonald's cheeseburgers (3 to be exact) and we were able to lure her out of the back yard toward my car with a slip lead collar. We immediately noticed she was having difficulty walking. She would take a few steps and sit/lay down. By the time we got her to the car, it was dark and difficult to check her out to see what was wrong. Our main goal was to get her to a safe space for the night before the rainstorm rolled in.
Baltimore shelters are full so I was able to secure a kennel for Rosie with my friend, Lyndsey Morgan of Obedient Blue, in Hereford, MD. Lyndsey is a skilled dog trainer who boards and provides doggy day care services for her clients. She works with local rescues and will take in dogs as needed.
After dropping Rosie off, Lyndsey noticed Rosie had a significant amount of ticks (at least 60 and still counting), raw paw pads with blisters, and red/inflamed on her nipple/tummy area. After removing all the noticeable ticks, Lyndsey gave her a bath and treated her with flea and tick meds. She also started treating her pads with salve to help them heal.
We are continuing to monitor the pads on her feet. She seems hesitant to walk and put pressure on them. We have food additional ticks on her over the past few days and are treating those as we see them. Every day gets a little better.
Next Steps:
Lyndsey has 9 personal dogs plus the rescue dogs, boarded dogs, and doggy day care dogs. I have 3 personal dogs and a foster dog. As you can imagine, it's a lot. We would both take her in if we could.
Lyndsey and I (along with many others) are working to help find a rescue that might be able to take her in. It's that time of year where many shelters and rescues are full and finding fosters is difficult but we are still trying. If you have any leads of rescues or organizations that can help (take her in, help find a foster, courtesy post, etc.), please reach out directly to Lyndsey Morgan or Ashleigh Camenga (myself).
In the interim, we need to get Rosie medical care ASAP. Lyndsey has made a vet appointment for Rosie this upcoming Tuesday, but we need help covering the medical costs along with additional items (food, treats, meds, etc.) to keep Rosie in Lyndsey's care.
During this appointment, we plan on having the vet:
- Do a general wellness exam
- Administer a heartworm test
- Look at her paw pads
- Look at her red/inflamed nipple and tummy area
- Give standard vaccinations
- Discuss spaying***
***We would like to find a rescue that can take her in if possible and spay her. If we are unable to do so, we would like to move forward with getting her spayed. Any extra money raised that is not used for Tuesday's appointment or general day to day care items would be put towards her medical bill for spaying. Updates on her medical care and general well being will be posted on a regular basis. We are happy to answer any specific questions those interested in donating may have about her vet care.***
We don't know much about Rosie other than what is shared above, but we want to help her and give her the life we know she deserves. She has proven to be an incredibly sweet dog. Once she gets comfortable with you (and it doesn't take long!), she wants to sit in your lap and give you kisses! She will even eat directly from your hands once you have gained her trust.
If you would prefer to donate an item for Rosie, there is a link to her Amazon Wishlist below. These items will help Lyndsey with Rosie's day to day care.
Thank you in advance for helping Rosie. She hasn't been in our care long, but we can already tell how special she is! I mean look at that face... (scroll to the bottom!)
