Miah Hood Surgery Fund
Donation protected
Hello all, my sister Miah had a pretty nasty fall today while out with her boyfriend. She ended up breaking her clavicle in three places and her hand/thumb. The doctors have informed us that she is going to need surgery to repair her clavicle. Right now she is scheduled to see a specialist on the 6th of April, from their they will schedule a date for the surgery but we anticipate that it will be within the next two weeks.
Due the COVID-19 outbreak she is currently unemployed. As of the first of this month our health insurance through the state stopped covering us. On the second of April (yesterday) we tried to set her up on her own insurance plan through the state and she was denied. We are looking to raise $25,000 USD to help pay for the cost of the treatment as well as the surgery. She may need physical therapy in the future as well but that is for a later date. Right now we desperately need help paying for this surgery.
My sister is a wonderful person, she has volunteered nearly every year of her life at summer camps and churches, among other places. She plans to attend school in the fall to further her goal of being a social worker. By the end of this current semester she will have completed her associates degree. She is graduating with honors, as well as being on the deans list. She received a full scholarship from her first choice school and plans to be moved out on her own for the first time in September of this year. As her family we want to do everything we can to prevent her from leaving home with a mountain of debt.
UPDATE*****
Miah is currently scheduled for surgery on both her collarbone and her hand. She will be having a metal plate placed on her collarbone to keep everything in place as the bone has fragmented into many pieces. As for her hand, the ligaments in her thumb have detached and will need to be re-attached. She will have pins left in her hand for 6-8 weeks as the healing process take over. Her surgeries are scheduled for this Friday April 10th. The surgery is out patient and she will be recovering at home. She will more than likely need physical therapy for her hand after the pins have been removed. The doctors are confident that both of these surgeries will go of without a hitch and are hopeful that there will be little to no permanent damage! Thank you so much for your donations and for sharing this around. We have already surpassed what we thought was possible, and are incredibly thankful for each and every one of you. Thank you for being a part of Miah's life and caring about her well being. If you have already donated money of any amount we are not asking you to donate more, but please continue to share this with your friends and family. We are still a long way from our goal but we are praying that with the support from you all as well as guidance from the Lord we will make it through this! Below we have attached additional pictures if you would like to see a very nasty bruise haha, but Miah is in good spirits about everything. Thank you all again for the support and we will update you all via this page as soon as she is out of surgery Friday morning.
UPDATE 4/11*********
Miah had both of her surgeries yesterday and is currently recovering from home! She is in a sizeable amount of pain but the medicine is keeping her at manageable levels and in good spirits. The surgeries were an over all success. She had two pins placed in her thumb to help the muscles re-attach. they have to remain in for 8 weeks but after that her hand should be fully functional and back to normal! Her clavicle on the other hand did not go as smoothly. Miah has abnormally small bones, something we were not aware of before this. Her collar bone is smaller in diameter than the average pinky finger. Upon seeing this her surgeon informed us that his initial plan of screwing the three pieces back together was pretty much out the window. When they opened her up they saw that her clavicle had broken into many small pieces, most of them too small to places screws into. the surgeon went ahead and placed screws in the pieces he was able to and for the rest they places a steel plate over her collar bone and filled it in with bones grafts. With this in mind her healing process is going to be a lot harder than expected. Her movement will be severely limited needing someone to be with her at all times to preform even the simplest of tasks such as eating. She is not allowed to move either of her arms, one is in a sling and the other is in a cast and must remain elevated at all times. Although it has only been one day since the surgery Miah has been in great spirits, laughing and making jokes with the rest of the family. With her attitude and outlook on the situation I am more than positive that Miah is going to make a full recovery. It will be hard and she will need our support and prayers, but if anyone can come out of this situation stronger than when she entered it, it's her. Thank you all again for your support and donations. It truly means more that what any of us can say! Another update will be coming shortly, until then please keep sharing this around. Thank you!
