Micah's Mission to Africa

Hi my name is Micah Austin and I am joining the Organization for International Development's Medical Mission to Africa.

This summer, doctors and nurses from the OID will travel to Rusangu University in Tanzania to provide medical care to the community.

Founder, Dr Roy Streete specializes in dentistry and is joined by specialist in the fields of ophthalmology, gynecology, cardiovascular health and nursing to support families from remote regions. "OID is concerned not only with the healthcare and economic needs of the poor but also with their training, educational and employment needs; so that they may be better able to provide for themselves and their families." - Dr Streete.

Beyond the medical mission, I am taking special care to engage with children my age at the Rusangu Secondary school in Monze.

These students suffered a tragedy last fall when their dormitory caught on fire. It seems that someone was trying to charge cell phones when faulty wiring sparked the flames.

We have spoken to the students there and feel that solar chargers would be very helpful in trying to avoid this type of incident in the future. The students have also asked for underwear and outer layers like sweatshirts. There are 430 girls and 550 boys at the middle school. I have reached out to corporations like Under Armour, Fruit of the Loom, Patriot and Apple for donations and hope to bring some of these items with me.

Beyond the medical mission, there will also be time for some geographical and cultural experiences. We hope to visit landmarks like Mt Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro Crater and meet the Maasai people and learn about their culture.

This is not my first medical mission. In 2017 I traveled with the OID to Jamacia to help people in remote villages on the island.
