Retired Tallahassee Police Sergeant Michael “Mike” Earl Womble, 61, passed away on November 5, 2023, after a long battle with cancer.
Mike attended North Florida Christian graduating in 1980. He worked at Kevin’s Sporting Goods while attending Florida State University, graduating with a degree in Business Management in 1984. After college he attended the Police Academy, graduating in 1988 with high accolades for his expert marksmanship and was awarded Top Gun in his class.
Mike and Janice’s love story started at the Sing Store in 1982 after high school where he worked with her brother, Bobby. They married in 1986 and started a growing family in 1991 with their first-born Michael Blair and second-born John David in 1997. As an avid hunter and angler, he loved being outdoors in nature. He enjoyed spending time hunting or fishing with his father, sons, and friends. He traveled across the states and to Canada in search of the next “big buck” for his wall of fame. He took his expert marksmanship under water and spearfished throughout Florida’s beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
As a nationally recognized expert and a member of the Ruger Owners & Collector’s Society, he traveled to shows across the country to showcase rare collectibles and share his knowledge and passions with others.
He dedicated his career to public service and was well loved by the community. He retired as a sergeant in 2016 after 27+ years of service. As a member of the Tallahassee Police Department, Mike was genuinely committed to serving the community with integrity, fairness, and compassion. He began his career as an officer on Patrol; he was a member of the POP Squad; worked as a FTO, Investigator, and he served as a sniper on the TAC Team and became the Sniper Team Leader in 2002 while also serving as a U.S Marshal on the Fugitive Taskforce. He was an “officer’s officer,” meaning that despite his rank, he always worked with the same diligence and dedication as those he commanded.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the GoFundMe account that has been established to raise money for a local based youth hunting and fishing charity.
He was preceded in death by: his brother, Terry Grant Womble.
