Michael Groover Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
Welcome to the Michael Groover Memorial Scholarship Fund! Our starting goal is to raise $15,000 to establish an annual scholarship fund for students pursuing the performing arts. All Dana Hills High School Seniors are welcome to apply. The intention of the scholarship is not limited to universities alone. These funds can be used towards training programs, summer intensives, workshops, private specialized instruction, improvisation classes, or even something as simple as a new pair of jazz shoes.

Michael did not come from a privileged childhood; he spent the majority of his life as his mother’s primary caregiver up until her passing in 2017. Although his adolescence was marked with the burden of adult responsibility, he was grounded in empathy, and especially laughter. No matter the challenge that Michael was going through, he found freedom and acceptance through the performing arts. An outlet to be whoever he needed and wanted to be. Our goal is to provide others with the special gift that only the performing arts offer. Whether it’s an outlet to relieve stress, a place that brings you joy, or a career you would like to pursue – we want to help make those dreams come true.

Michael became a friend to many at Dana Hills High School’s SOCSA Program (South Orange County School of the Arts). He overwhelmed the room with his talent and illuminated the hearts of teachers and students alike. He was the kid in high school that was adored by practically everyone, spending lunchtime with the office ladies, DHHS faculty, and of course, his friends. He was electric. His humor and wit were no less than top-tier brilliance, and he was guaranteed to make you roll over laughing. When you talk to any one of Michael’s friends, you’ll notice we all call him our best friend, which rings true to how he made everyone feel: fully seen, accepted, and loved. That was our Michael, making everyone feel safe to be their authentic selves.

Immediately following high school, Michael continued his involvement in the arts at Saddleback Community College, where he could remain close to his mom. He was cast in starring roles in musicals, plays, and participated on multiple improv teams. He transferred locally to CSU Fullerton and graduated with a degree in Radio, TV and Film. Among his many accomplishments, one highlight was The Michael Groover Program, a weekly radio show he wrote and produced - complete with guest appearances and storytelling that captured the hearts of his listeners for two seasons. Shortly after his mother’s passing, Michael moved across the country to pursue a lifelong dream of living in New York City. Four months into his life in the big city, Michael tragically and unexpectedly passed away, leaving behind a devastated sister and group of best friends.

Please join us in our effort to add more Michael magic into the world. We are so grateful for your support in building the most fabulous scholarship fund in honor of our favorite guy.
