Michael J. Masters

March 25, 1964 – March 5, 2021

As a young boy growing up in a large Greek-American family, Michael Masters was raised in a home that opened its doors and hearts to many families that came from Greece seeking a better life. This set an example of kindness and loyalty he would follow the rest of his life.

Michael shared a deep and abiding love with his wife Michelle, who he was married to for almost 30 years. From its start on a beach in Florida, Michael and Michelle’s marriage, founded on mutual respect and love, has inspired their daughters Eleni, Sophia, and Michaela to live as their father did.

Together, they lovingly and proudly raised three daughters and built a life and a home that Michael, according to his daughter, thought of as his paradise. While it brought him great satisfaction and happiness, Michael’s home reflected his spirit of generosity, as the host of regular and frequent gatherings that always took place “at the Masters’.”

“He refused to give up Thanksgiving,” says Michelle, insistent that his family be present for the celebration that he would take weeks to plan for, preparing a feast and cooking for several days and sometimes nights.

He always was empathetic towards those who needed guidance and hope, and then would provide that to them, acting as a mentor to several young people starting out in business, and helped others that came to him seeking his professional expertise.

Starting out in his father’s business, he eventually became its owner, and with his energy and ingenuity, he worked, tirelessly, to better the situation for small businesses and restaurants in the greater Philadelphia area. He moved on to national companies, becoming an integral team member, and a respected leader in the paper supply industry.

A devoted father, Michael wanted his daughters to grow strong and independent, teaching them everything from how to cook, to how to change the air in their tires. He also wanted them to appreciate their heritage. A summer trip to Greece in 2019, gave Michael the opportunity to show his daughters a country and land that was important to him. Michael supported his daughters in all their endeavors, including their friendships and relationships in which he wanted them to find the same love he had for Michelle.

When he wasn’t busy providing for his family, or conjuring up a multi-course and delicious meal for friends, or serenading them, playing beautiful musical on one of the guitars from his eclectic collection, Michael could be seen taking his motorbike out for a Sunday morning ride, trimming the trees that stood in his yard, or playing with his dogs that he cared for and enjoyed.

With his generosity of spirit, creativity and passion, and the kindness he always showed to his family, friends, community, and country, Michael embodied the very notion of the Greek word “philotimos.”
