Michael Bonderer's Medical Fund

On June 7th, the Executive Director of Homes from the Heart, Michael Bonderer, was admitted into the ICU at Hospital de la Mujer in San Salvador, El Salvador where he remains in critical condition. He has pneumonia, which is life threatening for him as a lung cancer patient, having already undergone a pneumonectomy.

I am reaching out because although we are a proud family, we desperately wish to get my father stable enough to be transferred to a hospital in the United States where he can get the quality care he deserves. As a Marine Corps veteran, his care would be covered North of the border, but getting him there is the issue. His respiratory condition and blood pressure must be stabilized before he would be able to make it through a commercial flight and we simply do not have the funds to cover an air ambulance. 


Aside from his health issues the current struggle is a financial one as the hospital costs for someone without medical insurance in El Salvador are tremendous and unlike in the US, payment is due at the time of service. The bill for just the first day of care was $3457.00 USD. As a family we have exhausted our resources and recognize that we have no choice but to ask for help.

16 years ago my dad loaded his truck to the brim with his tools and his dog and headed to Central America in search of redemption. We all thought he was crazy, and although we were right, his decision to head South ended up transforming countless lives. He has managed to build almost 600 homes throughout Guatamala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Haiti which have given displaced and poverty stricken families a new lease on life. He has given every fiber of his being to this mission and I feel that it's his turn to be on the receiving end.
