Michele’s Midwifery Schooling and Preceptorship
I’ve recently been accepted and enrolled into Birthwise Midwifery School in Maine. I’ve been pursuing midwifery for three years. I finished all of my nursing prereqs at OCC and planned on attending WSU for nursing and then on to the
CNM program.
Over the last two years, the idea of working within the Medical Industrial Complex has felt further and further from my midwifery and life philosophy. The freedom to be free. This has brought me to Birthwise where I will earn a Certified Professional Midwife license (CPM). I would like to work hand in hand with OBGYNs and PCPs but I know that my place is outside the complex. I’m pursuing midwifery to protect and preserve birthing people whom are disproportionately hurt and harmed during birth and postpartum. And I’ve found my divestment plan in Birthwise Midwifery School. As an institution, they focus on the real history of midwifery and give credit where credit is truly due. Their diversity program seems to be in line with what I need for my comfort at an educational institution.
Maine ranks number 3 in average monthly rent costs. The semester begins in April 2021 which means I will need new housing pretty quickly, materials and funds for tuition. The first year of 3 is 16K. Even after financial aid and loans I will owe thousands out of pocket come the end of 2022.
Once I’m through with the schooling portion in Maine I will be off to another state (not sure which yet) to begin my preceptorship. That will last approximately 1.5 years.
This pandemic has been difficult on most people, myself included and I will be appreciative of any amount you’re willing to donate to this growth in education.
Much love,
Mich
