Parkinson’s Disease is a movement disorder of the nervous system which severely impacts and diminishes many aspects of daily life.
Michael Donnelly, or Mick as he is affectionately known to his running mates, has been dealing with this now for almost 10 years, with symptoms starting in his late 50s.
This is a perfect example of the worst things happening to the nicest people. Mick has been powerless as his ability to fully participate in all the things he loves in life deteriorates month after month.
This has obviously been challenging emotionally for Amy, Kieran & Elka as they helplessly watch their husband and father suffer.
But Mick, as we would all expect, remains positive and upbeat. All the attributes he displayed during his stellar running career are on display. Resilience, tenacity, and courage are never doubted.
A couple of track seasons ago, in his mid-60s, with Parkinson's Disease, he ran a 5.50 mile and an 11.50 3,000m. His running action had changed but not his heart or desire.
As they say, form is temporary, but class is permanent. Mick is all class.
So, here is what Mick and his family are humbly asking.
There is a treatment available, which will involve inserting a neurological stimulator onto Mick’s brain. It will not cure his Parkinson’s Disease, but potentially it will reduce the worst of his symptoms and allow him and his family to lead a more enjoyable, fulfilling life.
This will cost Mick and Amy about $20,000. Clearly this a significant amount for their family with only one income.
If we, as the community of Mick’s friends, could raise even half that amount, it would help enormously.
Please support Mick if you can.
Thanks, Spehry.
