PLEASE SUPPORT MICK MURPHY & FAMILY
Mick Murphy went for a routine colonoscopy in 2020, as part of his diagnosis for suspected coeliac disease. This resulted in Mick being diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer. He underwent a loop ileostomy and has had over thirty cycles of chemotherapy since November 2020. Mick has been out of work as a truck driver for the intervening fifteen months.
The current diagnosis is that the cancer is advanced, in the liver, and inoperable. Mick will need to continue treatment and chemotherapy as a means of palliative maintenance.
Mick and wife Denise (Kearney) both hail from Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. They moved to Carrigtwohill in 2006. They have been involved in the community ever since first joining in the Family Resources Centre play group and have made many friends in Carrig. Mick and Denise have three children; Caoimhe (16), Dermot (12) and Cormac (10). Mick achieved a blackbelt with the J H Kim Taekwondo club and won an All Ireland Rowing medal with Rushbrooke Rowing Club. Denise briefly helped with coaching underage camogie and lent her web design knowledge to the club in the early days of the club website. She is a keen photographer and has taken many fantastic photos of juvenile matches that have enhanced club reports and publications. Caoimhe played a little camogie and was involved in Irish dancing. Dermot has a passion for GAA and loves lining out in the backs with Carrigtwohill Under 13s. He also plays soccer with Carrigtwohill United. Cormac has just started with J H Kim Taekwondo Club.
The Murphy family have to deal with Mick’s illness, with all the uncertainty and turmoil that it brings to their lives. Mick is unable to return to full-time or even part-time employment due to the treatment cycle of two weeks, combined with the bowel bypass
Carrigtwohill is renowned for its special and unique community spirit that won it a national Pride of Place award. This family have had to swallow their own pride in accepting help, as needs must. We are asking for the Carrig community and further afield to rally around Mick and his family at this difficult time. Having some support financially would mean that they have one less thing to worry about.
We are very conscious of the fact that there are so many fundraisers for many worthy causes at present. If you can, please donate as generously as possible to Mick, Denise, Caoimhe, Dermot and Cormac.
Thank you for reading Mick’s story.
“I would like to thank our friends in Carrigtwohill who thought of me and my family at this difficult time. My illness has put a huge mental strain on our family and completely changed our lives and our plans for the future. Having worked all of my adult life, it was a huge shock to be without a wage. Any support received would help ease some financial worries and lift our spirits by allowing us to create memories with the children giving us a distraction from our day to day troubles.”
