Food Security Project for Vulnerable Families in the North & East of Sri Lanka.
Have you ever been wondering how you can CHANGE SOMEONE’S LIFE to be better? If so here is how you can get involved by being part of a great ORGANIC micro-agriculture project to Secure Food for vulnerable families.
People living below the poverty line in Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka have very limited options to sustain their lives and livelihoods especially during emergency events such as the current COVID-19 global pandemic. Those most vulnerable in this war-affected region include daily wage earners, households headed by women and families that include a person with a disability.
With the objective of implementing long term sustainable initiatives, the North and East Economic Development (NEED) Centre is implementing the self-sustaining Micro Agriculture – Food Security project. This project will address the long term needs of the most vulnerable communities by promoting an affordable and sustainable approach for food security by encouraging families to cultivate ORGANIC vegetables, fruits, pulses, and yams within their living premises through home gardening initiatives.
The project will be launched in phases and as part of the first phase, 4 districts in the Northern Province and 1 District in the Eastern Province will benefit from the project.
The districts selected for phase 1, are:
· Kilinochchi District
· Mullaitivu District
· Vavuniya District
· Jaffna District
· Batticaloa District
Costs: Total cost for establishing and overseeing one home garden for 3 months is only $15 CDN (LKR 2,000); one village (100 home gardens) is $1,500 CDN and one district is $3,000 CDN.
With your support, the Canadian Tamil Congress has stepped up to adopt five villages (one village in each district noted above) totaling $7,500 CAD.
Funds raised through this page will be donated in full to NEED Centre for project implementation. For more details on this project, please visit: https://www.needcentre.org/food-security/
