The Oakland REACH is sad to announce the passing of our teammate, sister, and friend, Micshell Bunton. Micshell was a graduate of our Family Advocacy Fellowship, Cohort 2, and was so inspired by what she learned, she was excited to take what she learned and turn it into action to break the cycle of miseducation.
The Oakland REACH is committed to honoring Micshell’s memory by supporting her sons, Lejon and Tyran. Her youngest son, Tyran, is a middle school student, and Micshell’s dreams for him is to graduate from college. This was why she did this work and gave her all. All funds we raise will go to support her sons who were her world.
Micshell was a quiet and kind soul. We dubbed her our “silent assassin” because although shy, she was a fierce fighter for her youngest son, Tyran, and other students and parents in her community. The families Micshell worked with adored her and felt supported by her in their journey to access a quality education for their children.
She had a fire in her belly, and was a top performer on the team. She was selected to travel around the country: Nashville, Memphis, South Carolina to join forces with other advocates to lift up the power of parents and fix our broken schools.
Here is a blog post, which Micshell wrote in 2018, describes her story and her journey, and gives a sense of the extraordinary person she was.:
