Middleborough Skatepark

Donation protected

The town skatepark has served as a constructive recreational complex for the community of Middleborough for the past 21 years. It is arguably one of the most consistently trafficked facilities in Peirce Park.

All building structures have an expiration date, and unfortunately the park has run its course. Not only is the design of the park behind on the times, but structurally it is not safe for the participants who use it.

We are creating this fundraising outlet to promote and raise awareness of the need for a new facility. We want to invite the community to spread the word and show their support by raising money toward something the community can be proud of with a long lasting expiration date. We want to build a park that properly represents our town and promotes respectful, proper, and productive use.

In current times our research shows the average cost of a skate/bikepark is about $45/sqft  (https://publicskateparkguide.org/fundraising/how-much-do-skateparks-cost/). The Park Dept. is donating the current 10,000 sqft lot that the existing park is located, along with lights! This is a generous sized footprint for us to work with. This is also why our starting goal is so high. If you consider the costs of other large Govt. owned sport facilities like; ball fields ($160-200k), which require yearly maintenance, this becomes a reasonably attainable goal. Be mindful that skateparks require little to no maintenance and should last up to 20+years if not more (https://publicskateparkguide.org/get-started/c-community-outreach/questions-and-answers/)

The general consensus from our group meetings to date express the desire to build a modern style park mixed with bowls and street plaza elements. The design will be decided by the community as a whole for all who are willing to participate. Our only limitations will be based on funds raised and construction guidelines.

To get a rough idea of the style of park we are hoping for, this would be a comparable design and size.

This will not be entirely the community's responsibility. We have the ability and support to apply for grants and search for large donations to help make this a reality. We need to create some buzz in the community to express the need for this. As stated by one of our own park commissioners "The skatepark would be the last piece of the puzzle" -(Judy Bigelow-Costa) in updating Peirce Playground.
