In this time of COVID-19 and social distancing the effects are hard to miss. As a public health crisis we are all facing, the day to day needs of individuals are being challenged- economically, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.
Midtown Mutual Aid, a group community members and neighbors, is responding to these challenges to ensure that community members in the Gifford Park, Joslyn Castle, and Midtown area are tapped into available resources and receive support. In our beginning stages this has been implemented through collective effort, coordination, and seriously practiced health precautions.
What is mutual aid? It is a decentralized network of individuals working together to support the greater community, recognizing that we all have value and our capacities ebb and flow. We believe in solidarity, not charity.
With no clear end in sight to stay home measures and social distancing Midtown Mutual Aid will continue to exist as support for neighbors. Up to this point, community members have been acting as neighborhood point people, reaching out to neighbors and acting as a direct bridge for connecting resources and services to those who need them. This has included grocery pick-up/ delivery, cooking meals, and simply checking in to make sure that everyone is doing alright.
As an additional form of support, we have began putting together food distributions, providing pantry staples, fresh produce, and sanitary items for anyone who needs them. Funds are needed to continue providing food for our neighbors and community.
