Mike, our friend and neighbor, needs us now.
Perhaps you’ve had a beer with him, perhaps you’ve been the recipient of his great handyman skills, or perhaps you just know him through his girlfriend and partner, Kim. What you probably don’t know is that Mike has been diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer. So, I have started this GoFundMe to show our support and love for Mike.
Mike and Kim have known each other since their late teens and early twenties as they were growing up in Tallahassee, FL. They dated a few times and Mike actually worked for Kim’s father at his computer store in the early 80’s. However, life had other plans for both at the time and each raised a family in different areas of the US. In the early part of 2017, Mike had been widowed for three years and Kim was newly single. The two of them reconnected via social media and in 2018 Mike found himself able to relocate the Virginia. Starting where they left off in the late 70’s, Mike and Kim began a fun, adventurous, empty nesting life together.
In October of this year during a routine exam a tumor was found. During the past month of endless doctors’ appointments, CT’s and MRI’s it was found that the cancer has not metastasized to the liver or pulmonary. Not only is the cancer treatable but its curable! Mike is extremely positive and states its just another walk in the park. Kim has been Mike’s health case manager so that Mike can concentrate fully on his health and recovery. Mike begins four months of intravenous Chemo the first week of November. Sometime around the 1st of March, he will begin daily treatments of Radiation and continued Chemo for 5 ½ weeks. After shrinking the tumor as much as possible, probable surgery.
Mike is fortunate to have a wonderful support system of family, but none are local other than Kim. We are his local family. While Mike does have health insurance, he also has a high deductible, as well as maximum out of pocket that he must reach, and a very small amount of paid time off due having only been with his company less than a year.
Let’s all come together to support Mike and Kim. They are a wonderful couple and great members of the Leesburg and Crescent Place communities. With our help and support, Mike will be cured!
