Mike's Headstone

A year ago we buried our friend and loved one, Mike Serrano.
I don't want to write about Mike's tragic death, or how much it hurts still. I want you to know about his life & how much he was loved.
I'm writing this as someone who knew Mike as a young organizer. He was a member of Assata's Daughters and helped launch the #NoCopAcademy campaign. He helped run childcare for the young moms who participated in Assata's after-school programming. He attended protests, canvassed, led train takeovers, and was someone you could count on to show up, help out, and never leave without making sure you were good & telling you he loved you.
Mike was also a beloved friend. He still had close friends from childhood, and a "three musketeers" crew of ride-or-die besties (who taught me a lot about what it means to love and support each other). He made so many people laugh.
When he died, I met his classmates from Kenwood high and former elementary teachers who remembered him as a kind person and goofy classmate.
I have a lot of memories of Mike that I treasure. I loved his love for his people, I love that he shared so much more kindness and grace to the world than the world showed him. I love how fierce he was- but also silly. I love that in the short time that I knew him, he had grown so much.
He deserved a better world, where he could keep growing til he was old and grey.
Thank you for honoring Mike and helping his family purchase a headstone.
