What do you even say about a guy we've all known for most of our lives? Mostly a kind funny guy that is always looking out for us and making us laugh. Now it's our time to help him, as he's added so much to our lives.
Throughout all of this only family and few individuals have known of Mike's struggles. It's been a long and challenging year and please don't take it personally if you are just hearing of this for the first time.
A year ago Mike started falling regularly and having a awkward stance/ gait that I called his Herman Munster walk. Lol. As it progressed he was in excruciating pain and his legs were contracted and unable to use. He described it as a constant Charlie horse 24 hours a day. He hasn't walked at all and been in a wheel chair since November. Getting a diagnosis and him to the right places has been beyond difficult. I have basically become his sole care provider while still working full time. We have been doing labs and diagnostics that were making them suspicious of MS or ALS . Tomorrow we were supposed to have MRI s. But before we made it to that Wednesday he started declining respiratory wise and I called 911. We were at the hospital in Moses in the ER for 26 hours while they were trying to find and open bed at a higher acuity Hospital. He was finally transported to Central Hospital in Wenatchee on Thursday night. A full nuero work up and MRI showed his spinal cord was compressed and there wasn't any spinal fluid around the vertebrae that slipped. He had an emergent spinal surgery last. The surgery went as well as expected but outcome is still unknown. It is going to be a long and hard rehab recovery road. Our goal is that he is able to walk with a walker and be more independent.
He had his first PT this morning and did great!! He feels a difference and I see one in his mobility.
With all of that said we are at Central where he will be for a couple weeks until we get him transferred to an inpatient nuero rehab. It is all very overwhelming so I ask that Mike is not bombarded. We can communicate and I can keep you all updated through this group. Mike will reach out when ready.
Thanks in advance for your love and support as I know you all love Mike
