Miles Mini-Spartan Challenge
Donation protected
I am the proud principal of the Mini-Spartans Robotics team. Our team is made up of a group of 6 amazingly talented, creative, and hard working students from Miles STEM Magnet in the City of Huntington Park, California. Since October, these students have devoted several hours a day to building, programming and driving a robot while also engaging in a full blown STEM Research Project---all of this is in addition to their regular classwork. The kids have given it their all along with Coach Hernandez and Coach Peta who stayed after school, devoted several Friday nights, and did their own research on the weekends to get the robotics team started at Miles STEM Magnet.
All of their hard work paid off and their dreams came true on February 25 when the Mini-Spartans took first place in the STEM Research Project and ranked seventh in the Challenge competition at the 2018 California VEX IQ Elem. School State Championship -Southern California! Because of this, the team has qualified for the World Championship to be held April 28-29-30 in Louisville, Kentucky. It is hard to believe that this is the first time that they have ever entered any event like this.
Hard work does pay off but yet it does not pay for the kids and coaches to get to Louisville. As much as the parents wish they could pay for this experience for their children, the stark reality is that they cannot. The City of Huntington Park has a median household income of $35,000 with a poverty rate of almost 30%. At our school, ALL students are participating in the Free Federal Meal Program. Given these harsh facts, it is clearly not within the parents' means to pay for this trip.
This is an educational opportunity of a lifetime for these students that would consist of three days of competition and learning opportunities. The trip is expected to cost $13,400 *because airfare is going up) . The following costs are associated with this event:
$ 975 event registration fee (due March 18th-YIKES!)
$7,000 airfare for 6 students and 3 chaperones
$2,400 for 4 nights hotel accommodations 6 students + 3 chaperones
$2,600 for meals for 5 days for 6 students and 3 chaperones
$ 425 Entry fee for Team Event (last day of competition) (Payment due March 18)
Please note that all monies raised are going into the Miles Donations Account and will be spent following the rules, procedures, and laws that govern the use of donated funds within Los Angeles Unified School Distirct.
These incredible students are excited beyond belief and tremendously terrified all at the same time. They understand how much money is needed and they know that they won't go if they do not get the money on time.
Please help the Mini-Spartans Robotics Team go from "HP" to Kentucky!
