Miller Family-MS and Brain Cancer diagnoses

Hello, for those who are unaware, the Miller's (Jim, Manon, Brandon, Justin & Caroline) are a long-term Bow Valley family who has resided in Canmore since 1989.

Unfortunately within the past year, they have been given two heartbreaking diagnoses within their family of 5.

In February of 2023 Manon Miller (Wife & Mom) was diagnosed with MS. Throughout the past 6 months she has been navigating her disease and preparing to begin her main treatment plan come September. Due to her diagnosis, Manon is currently off of work and unable to drive due to her mobility limitations. This has been a hard diagnosis for the whole family to undertake.

On July 4th, 2023 Justin was brought to RockyView Hospital with complaints of a bad headache and not being able to use his left side. After an initial CT he was transported to the Foothills hospital to have an MRI, which showed a large brain tumour. Sadly on July 13th, Justin was diagnosed with a grade 4 Glioma brain tumour. Shortly after the diagnosis, Justin experienced 2 seizures which led him back to the Foothills Medical Centre. After a week-long stay in the neurology unit, Justin met with his medical oncologist. Unfortunately due to the type and location of Justin's tumour, it is inoperable and terminal. Should all treatment go as planned Justin is sadly facing a prognosis of 2 years. Justin is starting a hard 6 weeks of radiation and chemo treatment with the goal of shrinking the tumour to maintain his quality of life. Following these initial 6 weeks of treatment, he will move forward with more chemo and radiation.

Due to both of these diagnoses, the Miller family is experiencing the financial strain that comes with unexpected medical costs. Both Manon and Justin are requiring very expensive treatments and prescriptions that are NOT covered by basic health insurance.

Brandon is living in Calgary, and thankfully has a flexible enough job that he has been able to support and spend time with his younger brother. Caroline lives in Fort McMurray working as a teacher, she is doing her best to manage the financial strain of driving between Fort McMurray and Canmore to be able to support her family as much as possible. Jim now has to take time off of work and travel to Calgary frequently to support his son and care for his wife, all while being a pillar of support for his two other children Brandon and Caroline.
