Millie is climbing Mt Kilimanjaro!
Donation protected
On the 14th October 2016 I will be embarking on an expedition which will test me both physically and mentally more, I fear, than I have ever been tested! I am off to climb the heights of Kilimanjaro – the highest free standing mountain in the world and the highest mountain on the African continent. The peak of Kili sits at 5895m (19341ft) above sea level. I plan (hope) to complete the walk in 8 days, 6 days up and 2 days down.
In preparing myself for this challenge, which is self-induced and for a defined period of time, it has made me think of the many people in this world who live with daily constant challenges associated with illness or disease. It is these people who I would like to help in some way and why I ask for your help in raising funds for my chosen charities. I will split funds raised between the two.
When I think of someone who lives life with the constant challenge of an illness, I immediately think of my amazing mother. As many of you will know, she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at aged eighteen and since then has lived life with her head held high and a smile on her face despite the innumerable obstacles this chronic lifelong illness has thrown at her. She is herself, an inspiration to me and I couldn’t think of anyone better to admire and look up to. My elder sister has also recently been diagnosed and is already showing amazing strength and focus in dealing with the life changing events she needs to make.
JDRF is a charity focused solely on improving lives and curing Type 1 diabetes. They are part of a global network who fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. They work with the government, academia and industry to accelerate research as well as provide support and a voice to people with type 1 and their families. As part of a family with two type 1 diabetics, I have seen firsthand the benefits of research and treatment advances with my mum (who has been a guinea pig many times!) and the benefits of good support and education for newly diagnosed patients like my sister. By donating, please join me in striving towards a day when there is no more type 1 diabetes.
My second charity is When You Wish Upon A Star. So far in my life I have not been touched by the unimaginable difficulty of a child with a terminal illness. My total respect and appreciation goes to the families and friends who stay strong and positive in order to ensure beautiful children keep a smile on their faces as much as possible while surrounded by hospitals, doctors, tests and treatments. I think this charity is a beautiful thing. To transform the lives of terminally ill children and give them and their families the chance to escape any pain or uncertainty while creating precious memories of smiling and laughter and experiencing a wish of their own, I feel is one of the most sacred gifts that can be given. Please help continue fulfilling the wishes of children living with a life threatening illness across the whole of the UK by sponsoring my walk up Kili. More information on both charties can be found at www.jdrf.org.uk and www.whenyouwishuponastar.org.uk
Thankyou in advance for your support for my own challenge up Mount Kilimanjaro and for supporting both my chosen charities. Fingers crossed I can report success without too much altitude sickness…!
