We come to you with heavy hearts to share some difficult news about our beloved son.

Mathias became ill with flu-like symptoms in mid-June, he was taken to the doctors twice and began treatment. On June 30th our world fell apart. He was taken to the emergency room where his heart stopped and went into cardiac arrest. He needed life-saving support and was flown to two different hospitals. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

He is currently in the ICU receiving treatment at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where we were told he was the sickest child admitted at the time.

He was placed on ECMO in order to support his heart, lungs, and all vital organs on June 30th. On July 12, after 12 days the medical team decided to remove the ECMO therapy as his heart and lungs were showing improvement. On July 18th at 11:50 p.m., his respirator was removed as he continued to show improvement and only needed oxygen and dialysis.

It is extremely hard for us to explain the ups and downs we have felt in the last few weeks. Our brilliant, 14-year-old son is a fighter. Our son has always been a happy, tender, loving boy, who touches the heart of everyone around him. At school, he has always excelled, and his teachers always have nothing but praise for his work ethic and eagerness to learn and go above and beyond both inside and outside the classroom. Mathias is an athlete, he is part of the cross-country team, and is an avid soccer, football and basketball fan. Mathias has been working extremely hard to reach his goal of attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the goal of making an impact in the world. We know he will!

After 20 days of intense treatment, we were told that his extremities had been compromised. ECMO saved his life by saving his organs. However, his extremities did not receive enough blood flow. For this reason, after speaking to his medical team and after exhausting all options on Friday, July 21st the medical team made the difficult decision to amputate his left leg below the knee.

UPDATE

On July 25th Mathias underwent surgery to amputate his left leg above the knee and his right leg below the knee.

On August 1st, Surgery was performed to amputate both hands above the wrist. ( see posted updates)

As you can imagine, this news has left us all feeling a whirlwind of emotions. We find solace in knowing that this decision was made after careful consideration and consultation with medical professionals who have his best interests at heart. While it is undoubtedly a challenging road ahead, we firmly believe that this surgery will pave the way for a brighter future for our son.

Our son’s strength and resilience have always been an inspiration to us all. He has faced adversity with unwavering courage, and we have no doubt that he will continue to do so throughout this journey. We are in awe of his unwavering spirit and determination, which will undoubtedly guide him through the challenges that lie ahead.

During this time, we kindly ask for your support, love, and prayers. Your words of encouragement and positive energy will undoubtedly provide comfort and strength to Mathias as he prepares for this life-changing surgery. Let us come together as a community, united in love and compassion, to uplift him and our family during this difficult time.

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible medical team who will be guiding us through this process. Their expertise, care, and dedication are invaluable, and we are eternally grateful for their unwavering support.

While we may not fully understand the reasons behind life's trials, we firmly believe that there is always a silver lining. The center of our family is God, we know that while walking in the deepest waters, we have always known that God is with us. We have faith that this surgery will open new doors for our son allowing him to embrace life's possibilities with renewed vigor and determination.

Please keep Mathias in your thoughts and prayers as he embarks on this challenging journey. Let us surround him with love, positivity, and unwavering support, reminding him that he is never alone in this battle.

Together, we can help him find the strength to overcome any obstacle that comes his way. Let us be the pillars of support he needs during this time, reminding him that he is loved beyond measure.

His medical journey has just begun, and he will need continued medical care which will include multiple therapies, interventions, and prosthetics.

Hoy nos dirigimos a ustedes con el corazón encogido para compartir algunas noticias difíciles sobre nuestro querido hijo.

Mathias se enfermo con síntomas gripales a mediados de junio, lo llevamos dos veces al médico y empezó el tratamiento. El 30 de junio nuestro mundo se vino abajo. Lo llevamos a urgencias, donde su corazón se paró y sufrió un paro cardíaco. Necesitó soporte vital y fue trasladado en hlicoptero a dos hospitales diferentes. Lo diagnosticaron neumonía y síndrome de shock tóxico estreptocócico.

Actualmente está en la UCI recibiendo tratamiento en el Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, donde nos dijeron que era el niño más enfermo ingresado en ese momento.

El 30 de junio lo conectaron a ECMO para mantener el corazón, los pulmones y todos los órganos vitales. El 12 de julio, después de 12 días, el equipo médico decidió retirar la terapia ECMO porque su corazón y sus pulmones estaban mejorando. El 18 de julio a las 23:50 se le retiró el respirador porque seguía mejorando y sólo necesitaba oxígeno y diálisis.

Tras 20 días de tratamiento intenso, nos dijeron que sus extremidades habían quedado comprometidas. La ECMO le salvó la vida al salvar sus órganos. Sin embargo, sus extremidades no recibían suficiente flujo sanguíneo. Por este motivo, tras hablar con su equipo médico y después de agotar todas las opciones, el viernes 21 de julio el equipo médico tomó la difícil decisión de amputarle la pierna izquierda. Es con una mezcla de emociones que les informamos que el martes 25 de Julio fue amputada de su otra pierna.

Como pueden imaginar, esta noticia nos ha dejado a todos sumidos en un torbellino de emociones. Nos consuela saber que esta decisión se ha tomado tras una cuidadosa reflexión y consulta con profesionales médicos que velan por sus intereses. Aunque sin duda nos espera un camino difícil, creemos firmemente que esta operación nos llevara hacia un futuro mejor para nuestro hijo.

Nos resulta extremadamente difícil explicar los altibajos que hemos sentido en las últimas semanas. Nuestro brillante hijo de 14 años es un luchador. Nuestro hijo siempre ha sido un nino alegre, tierno y cariñoso, que llega al corazón de todos los que le rodean. En la escuela siempre se ha destacado, y sus profesores no tienen más que elogios por su ética de trabajo y su afán por aprender e ir más allá tanto dentro como fuera del aula. Mathias es un atleta, forma parte del equipo de atletismo, es un ávido aficionado al fútbol, al fútbol americano y al baloncesto. Mathias ha estado trabajando muy duro para alcanzar su meta de asistir al Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts con el objetivo de hacer un impacto en el mundo. Sabemos que lo conseguirá.

La fuerza y la resistencia de nuestro hijo siempre han sido una inspiración para todos nosotros. Se ha enfrentado a la adversidad con un coraje inquebrantable, y no tenemos ninguna duda de que seguirá haciéndolo a lo largo de este viaje. Estamos asombrados por su espíritu inquebrantable y su determinación, que sin duda le guiarán a través de los retos que le esperan.

Durante este tiempo, les pedimos su apoyo, cariño y oraciones. Sus palabras de aliento y su energía positiva proporcionarán sin duda consuelo y fuerza a Mathias mientras se prepara para otras operaciónes. Unámonos como comunidad, unidos en el amor y la compasión, para levantarle a él y a nuestra familia durante este difícil momento.

Aunque puede que no entendamos del todo las razones que hay detrás de las pruebas de la vida, creemos firmemente que siempre hay esperanza. El centro de nuestra familia es Dios, sabemos que mientras caminamos en las aguas más profundas, siempre hemos sabido que Dios está con nosotros. Tenemos fe en que estas cirugías abrirán nuevas puertas para nuestro hijo, permitiéndole abrazar las posibilidades de la vida con renovado vigor y determinación.

Por favor, tengan a Mathias en sus pensamientos y oraciones mientras se embarca en este difícil viaje. Rodeémosle de amor, positivismo y apoyo inquebrantable, recordándole que nunca está solo en esta batalla. Juntos, podemos ayudarle a encontrar la fuerza para superar cualquier obstáculo que se le presente. Seamos los pilares de apoyo que necesita durante este tiempo, recordándole que es amado sin medida.

Su camino esta empezando, y necesitará cuidados médicos que incluirán múltiples terapias, intervenciones, transporte, medidas de accesibilidad domiciliaria y prótesis.

Por lo tanto, con la mayor humildad, les pedimos que compartan el viaje de Mathias con sus amigos y familiares y que consideren la posibilidad de ofrecer cualquier ayuda económica de la que puedan disponer. Su apoyo nos ayudará con las facturas médicas, las prótesis de por vida, las terapias y otros tratamientos, y nos permitirá centrarnos de todo corazón en el futuro y el bienestar de Mathias.
