Hi!
My name is Alicia Gale and I teach 10th grade English and AICE General Papers at Lake Worth Community High School in Lake Worth, FL. Established in 1922, it is currently one of Palm Beach County's largest schools, with about 80% of our students living below the poverty line.
About 130 kids pass through my door on a daily basis and every single one of them is hardworking, determined, intelligent, respectful, inspiring, etc. I honestly could go on and on forever bragging about the joy these children have brought to my life, but it's time for me to do something big for them!
Many of my students do not have access to life's basic necessities, much less supplies for school or technology. They LOVE to learn, but struggle to find the time to head to the library to get projects done between school, work, extracurriculars, and taking care of their siblings, or in some cases, their parents.
We have a set of 5 classroom desktops that they currently use for research projects, FSA writing test practice (similar to the FCAT, but this new test is computer-based), essay writing, NewsELA practice, and collaborative group work, but these 5 simply aren't enough. Many of my students resort to using their smartphones, which don't provide them with the much needed typing practice they'll have to have in order to pass their FSA tests and meet their graduation requirements.
For this reason, I am spending this summer raising the funds to order at least 5 Google Chromebooks for my students. All additional funds will be used to buy basic classroom supplies for our project station - binders, dividers, highlighters, markers, colored pencils, poster boards, sticky notes, index cards, notebook paper, pencils, and pens.
Please help me on my quest to enhance the lives of these amazing children. Every penny lifts them towards a brighter future!
