Support Miss Griffin's Scholars

Hello. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ebonie Griffin, and I am a recent graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, minoring in Applied Developmental Psychology. Upon graduation, I relocated from California to Florida to embark on a different academic mission as a 2013 Teach For America Corps Member serving in Miami. Currently in the United States, 16 million children live in and constantly combat poverty. Strikingly, only 8% of these children will earn a college degree by the age of 24. Teach For America is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 with the mission of ensuring that one day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Thus, every child living in America deserves scholastic excellence regardless of where they live, their familial income, or the color of their skin. To aid in this mission, Teach For America recruits and trains recent college graduates and professionals to teach in urban and rural schools in order to guarantee they have a positive impact on their students.

As a current Corps Member and leader in this vision, I have spent this summer teaching entering 1st graders in a low-income community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There I was overwhelmed by the children's joy and inspired by their tenacity. However, I also was greatly disheartened by my students' focus on hunger and supplies as many of them asked to take home pencils to do their homework and bring home the remainder of their lunches.

Beginning Monday, August 19th I will have my own classroom at Van E. Blanton Elementary School. This school serves the low-income population of Northern Miami. In order to help in achieving educational equality, I am asking that you please donate to my classroom to help our room look just like a high-performing classroom in high-income neighborhood. I need to supply my students with a comfortable classroom library full of books, mathematics manipulatives, writing notebooks, classroom cubbies to organize our supplies etc. It is imperative that every child has the chance to learn and the resources to achieve greatness.

If you feel more comfortable donating physical supplies rather than a monetary donation, feel free to contact me for my address.

Thank you.
