Thursday, September 13, 2018 was a beautiful, blue sky day in Denver, Colorado, until 12:15 PM when Mitch Becker was seriously injured riding his motorcycle home from the dentist. By no fault of his own, his life is forever changed.
Mitch’s “new normal” has included 6 surgeries to repair a bleeding/torn spleen, broken neck resulting in his paralysis, broken back, compound femur fracture, and the partial amputation of his right foot. But most frightening of all, due to his paralysis from the chest down, a collapsed lung and lung secretions created complications with breathing and he died on 2 occasions. Thankfully the phenomenal doctors and nurses at Denver Health brought him back to life.
He has spent 75 days at Denver Health in their Surgical ICU, Progressive Care Unit and Ortho Unit. Currently, he is at Craig Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Hospital; they anticipate 2 to 3 months of rehabilitation and then home for daily physical therapy. Through this entire life-changing experience, Mitch remains positive, playful and thankful for all the miracles that God has given him. Knowing Mitch’s love of all and his contagious sense of humor, we couldn’t help but take bets as to his first comments – “Coffee please,” “DQ Blizzard please,” “How about a cigarette,” but best of all, “Wow, that was a helluva a root canal.”
As we all know laughter can be the best medicine. Please join us at the Denver Improv, starring John Morgan - The Ragin Cajun, on Sunday, December 30th at 7:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm). Tickets will be $25. All contributions (GoFundMe & Benefit Show) will be used by me for the construction of an attached addition to my house so he can return there in order to enable his continued well-being and gain his independence instead of living at a long-term facility (nursing home).
