Mixed Farming in Ghana

Liebe Interessent*innen und Spender*innen,

Mein Name ist Barbara, ich bin 23 Jahre alt, studiere Informatik im sechsten Semester in München und arbeite nebenbei als Tennistrainerin. Ich selber bin in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen, meine Mutter ist Ghanaerin und ich fühle mich sehr mit Ghana und der dortigen Kultur verbunden. Aus diesem Grund wende ich mich an Euch, um Eure Aufmerksamkeit für mein Projekt “Mixed Farming in Ghana” zu gewinnen. Vor einem Jahr haben wir begonnen verschiedene lokale Gemüsesorten und tropische Früchte anzupflanzen wie z.B. Wassermelonen, Mais, Kokosnusspalmen, Yam...

Mit diesem Projekt möchte ich zum einen Arbeitsplätze für die Gemeinschaften in den umliegenden Dörfern schaffen. Zurzeit unterstützen uns bereits 12 festangestellte  Farmarbeiter und saisonal weitere Helfer während Anbau und Ernte. Dabei bieten wir den Familienvätern die Möglichkeit für sich und ihre Familien eine bessere Zukunft aufzubauen. Mit den Spenden haben wir bereits Fahrräder gekauft damit der Arbeitsweg kürzer wird, Smartphones für eine Teilhabe am Internet sowie wichtige Grundnahrungsmittel die in den letzten Monaten sehr teuer geworden sind. Das regelmäßige Gehalt ermöglicht auch, dass die Kinder der Mitarbeiter bessere Schulen besuchen können. 

Unser Projekt hilft mit die lokale Essensproduktion in diesem Teil von Ghana zu unterstützen. Wir betreiben regionalen Anbau und verringern damit gleichzeitig überteuerte Lebensmittelimporte. Den umliegenden Gemeinden bieten wir die Möglichkeit auf einem Teil des Landes für ihren eigenen Bedarf anzubauen. 

Unseren Anbau gestalten wir nachhaltig und klimaschonend. Dabei verwenden wir organische Düngemittel und klimaschonende Gemüsesorten und Früchte. Abhängig vom Klima und dessen Bedingungen passen wir unseren Anbau an. Wichtig ist uns klimafreundlich und zudem möglichst emissionsschonend zu wirtschaften.

Wichtig ist uns auch zu betonen dass dieses Projekt “black owned” ist. Mein Team besteht aus Ghanaern die jahrelange Erfahrung in Landwirtschaft und  Management haben vor allem auch unter Berücksichtigung der lokalen Gepflogenheiten. Meine Priorität ist, dass dieses Projekt von den Menschen für die ghanaische Community ist. Dabei möchte ich postkolonialen Strukturen entgegenwirken und meinen Beitrag für eine selbst bestimmte Zukunft Afrikas leisten.

Dieses Projekt liegt mir und meiner Familie sehr am Herzen und deswegen bitte ich Euch um Eure Unterstützung.

Dear reader and/or supporter,

My name is Barbara and I am 23 years old. I am studying computer science in Munich and have a part-time job as a tennis coach. I was born and raised in Germany, my mother is Ghanaian and I feel closely connected with Ghana and its unique culture. That’s why I’d like to draw Your attention to my project “Mixed Farming in Ghana''. One year ago we started to plant a variety of local vegetables and tropical fruits e.g. watermelon, maize, coconutpalmtress, yam et. al.

With this project, I would like to create jobs for the communities in the surrounding villages. Currently, we already have 12 permanent farm workers and seasonal helpers during cultivation and harvest. We offer the fathers of families the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their families. With the donations, we have already bought bicycles to shorten the way to work, smartphones to access the internet and important basic foodstuffs that have become very expensive in the last few months. The regular salary also enables the employees' children to attend better schools. 

Our project helps to support local food production in this part of Ghana. We grow food locally and at the same time reduce overpriced food imports. We offer the surrounding communities the opportunity to grow food on part of the land for their own needs. 

Our cultivation is sustainable and climate-friendly. We use organic fertilisers and climate-friendly vegetables and fruits. Depending on the climate and its conditions, we adapt our cultivation. It is important to us to cultivate in a climate-friendly way and to reduce emissions as much as possible.

It is also important to us to emphasise that this project is "black owned". My team consists of Ghanaians who have many years of experience in agriculture and management, especially with regard to local customs. My priority is that this project is by the people for the Ghanaian community. In doing so, I want to counteract post-colonial structures and make my contribution to a self-determined future for Africa.

This project is very close to my heart and that is why I ask you for your support.
