Help Daisy Walk Again
Donation protected
Daisy had a rough start in life, arriving at a local rescue through an animal cruelty case in August 2022. In her time there, she had her tail amputated after another dog bit it through her kennel and then, in November 2022, tore her left cruciate ligament in a fall. She came into my home as a foster in January, with the rescue indicating that she would have cruciate ligament surgery in February.
Months passed and Daisy's mobility remained extremely limited, while the rescue evaded my calls and emails about scheduling her surgery. By July, she had also sustained damage to her right leg, a result of using it to bear most of her weight for several months. It had become clear that the rescue had no serious plan for securing her surgery.
It has now been eight months since Daisy was able to walk without pain or limp more than a few steps, but there is good news! I was finally able to adopt Daisy in early August - she has found her forever home! She has been seen by a veterinary orthopedic surgeon and we are exploring options for treating the extensive damage to both back legs. More details will become clear in the next week, but early estimates place this surgery at approximately $5000 for each leg, or a total of $10,000.
No animal should have to endure what Daisy has, but she remains one of the most loving, affectionate, and gentle dogs I've ever met. She was one of my best and most devoted consolers as I made sense of my life after divorce and has remained a steadfast dissertation writing buddy. She hasn't quite learned play, but she has learned to snuggle, wag her tail when encountering a friend, and make a strong case that you should give her the last bite of your banana. Once she has finished recovering, we look forward to hiking, playing fetch, and feeding the chickens together for the rest of Daisy's life.
Any contribution you might make is greatly appreciated. I'll continue to share updates about Daisy's progress and hopefully, someday soon, a video of her first time running and her first game of fetch.
