Dear Detroit neighbors,
You may have seen the headlines: journalism is facing a devastating, industry-wide decline in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there are signs of hope that we are making progress in fighting the novel coronavirus that has swept through our community, claiming the lives of hundreds of our friends and neighbors, Model D is not invulnerable to the grim financial realities that the industry is facing. We've had to make painful budget and staffing cuts in recent months to weather this storm. And we are at risk of scaling back our reporting and publishing less often.
We need your help to continue our critically important work.
Our content has always been free. For the first time, we’re asking for support from subscribers, readers, and friends like you. We have never reached out like this, but these are urgent times and we need you more than ever.
Model D is not exempt from this shift. Our parent company has had to make painful budget and staffing cuts in recent months to weather this storm.
Now is the time for more local journalism, not less. COVID-19 has laid bare the vulnerability of many Detroit communities – communities of color, youths, service industry workers, people experiencing homelessness, and others. Detroit has been especially hit hard by the coronavirus, which has disproportionately affected Black residents. As we have done for the past 15 years, we have been publishing uplifting stories of how residents, businesses, and nonprofits are responding to this crisis, showcasing community-led solutions powered by equity, innovation, and talent. As our community moves from emergency response to recovery mode, we need journalists who can continue reporting with nuance and care. We can’t afford to cut back now.
Detroiters are reshaping their communities with compassion and connection. They’re addressing problems in existing systems, from health care to the economy, and reimaging a new future. Please help us continue telling these important stories of how Detroit’s remarkable people are shaping and transforming the city’s future.
We know many residents are facing financial hardship and uncertainty. But if you’re able, please support Model D so we can continue reporting in these challenging times.
Thank you!
