Hi, everyone!
My name is Modona Conteh, and I'm a freshman, rising sophomore Computer Science major at Howard University! I am also a Capstone Scholar, and an active member of Howard's chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.
I haven't always been a CS major-- I came in as a psychology major, but by the end of the semester I had come to the conclusion that I needed challenge, structure, and organization, all of which computer science could provide.
In the fall, while I was a psychology major, other computer science students had to immediately start taking their major's specific courses. Second semester (i.e my first semester in the program) is meant for a completely new coding language (C++) and a Unix Operating System class. Because of the specific times in the academic year and manner in which CS classes are offered at my school, I'm already a semester behind in my major courses. I'm unable to take any two CS courses simultaneously in order to catch up, because of the fact that every upper level CS course has a prerequisite-- and in my case, the Intro class is a prerequisite, not a co-requisite to Computer Science 1, and the same rings true for CS1 and CS2.
Alongside all this, CS students are required to take math classes up to Calculus Two, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Structures. The graduation scheme even recommends that CS students begin the program with Calculus One. This is where the problem lies, and in comes the very serious possibility that I may have to graduate a year after I'm supposed to. When I graduate isn't really what bothers me, because I understand the sacrifice I made changing my major into a program with such specificity. The issue lies in the Capstone Scholarship being one that only lasts 4 years. So, if there's anything I can do to ensure I can get my degree in 4 years, I'll do it!
After constant discussion with my academic advisor, the best move for me would be summer school for the next two years so I can catch up, in both Computer Science courses and Mathetmatics courses. This is where you come in! I've registered to take a summer maths course at my local community college, but as of Monday, I was hit with a shocker-- The due date for 50% of whatever the cost is for my class, which is the close of business tomorrow, May 10th, 2017. Now, at my community college, for visiting students the rate is $113 per credit hour. The math course I'm enrolling in is 4 credit hours. Therefore, my tuition cost is:
113 x 4 = $452.
There are other fees that bring the total cost up to exactly $701.
50% of the payment is $350.50
If unable to make this payment, I will lose my spot in the class and must re-register, but will lose my place again until I make the 50% paymeny. The last day I'm allowed to register for classes is next Monday, May 15th. I am not guaranteed a spot in this class, as it only has 35 seats.
Any contributions that can help me further my education and assist me in completeing my school's computer science program are greatly appreciated!
