Mom needs a home to heal

On October 9, my mom, her brother and her two cats are to be evicted of the house I grew up in, and in which they've lived for the past 47 years. The landlord who wants the property back to rent it seasonally to tourists at a higher price, won a trial against them a few months ago.


My mom is so deeply attached to the memories in this house, that the unbearable sorrow gave her a heart attack a little over a month ago. She’s still weak and having a hard time recovering under current stressors, and with a lack of physical and mental health assistance due to the medical system overload caused by COVID. 


Rent on the island for a small 2-bedroom apartment runs around 3 times the amount of rent they are currently paying for the house. And the only income they have is my mom's retirement, which already had her struggling with paying basic life expenses. She is devastated, her health is seriously compromised and her spirit is crushed. She lives in constant fear of becoming homeless.


In the past several months, dear close friends on the island and myself have been looking for rental options and we haven’t been able to find anything yet. COVID has created a huge economy crisis in Ibiza - the island depends on tourism for income - and a lot of people are losing their homes too. 


On her behalf, I’m asking for help and support to get her through this extremely difficult life transition. In practicality, here’s an overall summary of expected costs to help her through a 10-month transition phase, hoping that things will settle a bit by then - globally and personally.


The initial move and move-in will cost a projected 4000 euros ($4700): 

1000 euros moving expenses

2000 euros required down payment (or deposit) for an apartment, typically at least 2x the monthly rent

1000 euros realtor agency fee, typically at least one-month rent

And in addition to covering the costs of the move, my hope is to also provide some much needed help with ongoing expenses in the first 10 months. An additional 5000 euros (or $5900) would provide my mom with 500 euros per month to help cover increased costs.
