The cost of battling Metastatic Breast Cancer. Tina was diagnosed 2010. Nurse Tina went for the best. We opted for aggressive action. her team of surgeons performed a Double mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction. A very tough 8 hour surgery.
We made it to the Giants world series 2010. she went back to work thinking she had got it all.
2016 the cancer returned. Tina retired from Tahoe Forest Hospital after 40 years as a nurse. Side effects from Chemo and just the diagnosis was too exhausting to see patients anymore. With that the insurance went away. Insurance premiums, non covered stuff and cost of traveling for treatment, house payments , a son in college and bills are exhausting her retirement. Casey Jones her husband 34 years retired from one of his Jobs as ski patrol. I drive her to chemo in the winter and spend more time with Tina. I am working in the summer still as long as I can. Tina is a few months into her second chemo drug. the first one worked for 24 months, as predicted then stopped.
Our oncologists treatment strategy is to kill it in place and prevent spread. Further surgery is not recommended as the healing areas would be fertile areas to encourage cancer growth.
Tina has given so much to the many people she nursed. She is a fierce patient advocate. Middle of the night drives to Loyalton to do hospice care were the toughest I think.
Her ski buddies call her to ski for a couple hours at a time. That is her passion now.
She touched so many patients and their families with her passion.
She still does so as he cares for her aging parents and her best friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer.
We Do not expect a cure, although that may happen. we do expect a long fight.
If anyone has breast cancer and would like to know anything we have learned about or who to see, please contact me Casey
