Help for Marivic

What Happened:

On June 11, 2023, my mother, Marivic Burdick, suffered from a subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) caused by hypertension (elevated blood pressure). She was initially taken to St.Lukes Medical Center at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Metro Manila, in the Philippines.

After an initial scan, the doctors initially thought she suffered from an aneurysm (an abnormal swelling or bulge in the wall of a blood vessel, such as an artery).

She was transferred to the Philippine Heart Center in Central Quezon City where, after performing an angiogram (a scan that shows blood flow through arteries or veins) found no evidence of an aneurysm-- just a subarachnoid hemmorhage. She was admitted to the ICU, where she later contracted Staphylococcal Pneumonia (bacterial infeciton of the lungs).

Her current status as of June 15, 2023:

She is currently still in the ICU at the Philippine Heart Center. After a third CT scan and angoigram, they have confirmed that the brain hemmorhage is regressing (bleeding reducing). She is still battling the pneumonia, and was transferred to a more isolated space in the ICU to take precautions as she handles her infection.

My father and I had the opportunity to visit her for the last few days, and we watched her condition improve. She has been intubated (a tube inserted through a persons mouth and down into their airway/windpipe) the entire time and is not able to utilize her sensorium (the totality of those parts of the brain that receive, process, and interpret sensory stimuli-- examples include nervous system, nerves, peripheral nervous system, etc.), and has lost funciton of all her limbs aside from being able to slightly nod her head, blink her eyes, and slightly smile. We do not know whether the loss of her limb functionality is permanent or not, however the doctors have advised that she start on physical rehabilitaiton soon. Each day my father and I visited, we were able to see an improvement-- a reduction in swelling around her body, and more responsiveness. I would ask her questions like, "Blink twice if you can feel me touch your hands" and she would blink twice, and this is how she has answered some questions I've asked her. Yesterday, I asked "Blink once if you feel better today" and she did!

She seems completely mentally aware -- although she cannot speak due to the tube down her throat. Today, the update from the hospital is that she continues to be more responsive-- her eyes are opening more and her blood pressure and heartbeat are continuing to stabalize.

The doctors estimate they will need to monitor her for 3-5 days in the ICU as they issue antibiotics to fight the bacterial infection, and then a minimum of 1 more week in the ICU to monitor the progress of the reduction of her hemmorhage / run other related tests (suspicion she may have cystic kidney disease, which has a direct correlation to anuerysms).

This GofundMe has been started to help accumulate money to cover the cost of my mother's ICU stay. She has already been in the ICU for 5 days, and is expected to stay a minimum of 15 more days. She has had multiple scans and medications issued, and will need rehabilitation help. Our family can use all the help we can receive. 1 day at St.Lukes medical center cost us $5,000, so we estimate our costs will likely add up to $100k or more when this all resolves.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers! They worked!! And are continuing to work! My mom is a fighter and she feels everyone's love. I have tried as much as possible to extend regards, give hugs, and provide words of positivity and encouragement. Although she cannot speak, I know she is thankful and extends her love to everyone.

My father and I, along with my family and extended family are so grateful for the help provided. We have been contacted by so many people with kind toughts, words, prayers, and even monetary assistance during this time.

Thank you in advance for anything you are able to contribute-- monetary or not. The Burdick, Madriaga, and Matteson families greatly appreciate it so so much.

Thank You,

Melodygrace (Marivic's Daughter)
