Almost Like You

We've recently found a family of 3 living in our community, and their car seemed to always be parked right outside our family's workplace. It seemed a little unusual how they came and went but always left the car in the parking lot, so we investigated. Upon meeting them, we learned of their story. They were once a family of 4, but the mother passed away recently, leaving the family of father, daughter, and son homeless and without a steady source of income. The father and son, who just started at a local middle school, live in the parked car, and the little money earned from the father's highly unstable job must be saved and given to the daughter to continue her education in college. Gas is unaffordable, so the son often cannot go or has to walk 2 miles with his father to attend school due to the unreliable source of transportation that they call home. On some days they're not able to afford food and cannot eat, and they don't have enough money to buy clothes for the winter or year round. Because they have no place to live, they have not been able to shower in almost half a year. They've kept quiet about their situation for fear of people finding out, since their way of living is considered "loitering" and against rules. Due to this, we have not included photos of them or their living space to refrain from getting them into any trouble. 

"Everyone is one paycheck away from homelessness."

The family was once exactly like the rest of us, in a home with a source of income and a child beginning their further education, until they reached that one paycheck. Now they're only almost like you.
