MONICA ORD IS EXTREMELY SICK AND NEEDS YOUR HELP

This woman, who has changed the lives of so many, needs your help to change hers

Monica Ord is a woman truly unlike any other. One of those rare ‘1 in a billion’ people that you just intuitively know is an exceptional person.

Despite an upbringing by dysfunctional parents, and being made homeless at just 13, Monica has spent the entirety of her adult life in service to others, from individuals that she’s worked with through her selfless career to her tireless quest to raise awareness of climate change and the plight of the Arctic Inuit people.

Monica’s career has taken her to reaching the position of Senior Vice President of Communications for Viral Genetics, an organisation that seeks to develop HIV and AIDS immune-based therapies for people in African countries. Monica has spent a vast amount of time in South Africa, where she is known for working on clinical trials with a population of men, women, and children who are living with HIV. Not content at simply developing the solution, she has aided these people from her own pocket, sometimes barely being able to afford her rent.

In addition, she partnered with filmmaker Lloyd Phillips to craft a groundbreaking environmentally-focused drama film called Chloe & Theo. This was based on the true story of Theo Ikummaq, an Inuit leader, who has repeatedly tried to raise awareness of the destruction of the Arctic and his people, but been silenced by the United States. Chloe & Theo told his tale, featuring A-list Hollywood talent, giving power to his voice, and has continued to impact upon climate policy to this day.

Yet on the day of winning a humanitarian award for her work on the film, Monica was admitted to ER in agony. This would be the start of a 4 year journey that has yet to end.

Failing health in a failed healthcare system

Major issues with her gut has led to Monica undergoing years of healthcare, which has included seven major surgeries, and yet to no avail.

Only recently did she discover that her doctors had misdiagnosed the issues with her gut. They were not related to nerve damage, which had been the diagnosis for years. Instead, they’re related to poor bloodflow to the gut.

The American healthcare system has nonetheless cost her over $4.5 million in fees to this point, with her insurance covering only $4.1 million of this. Monica is out of pocket by over $500,000, and she continues to need to pay $6550 in costs every single month for her treatments.

She cannot sue the doctors who have misdiagnosed her, as California has a cap on malpractice lawsuits, meaning there’s no regaining all the money she has already spent. She is unable to work due to the condition she is in.

At this stage, she has been diagnosed with ischemia, among other things, which means her gut is literally dying. She also currently has 35 extremely painful ulcers. Right now, Monica can barely eat, still has ongoing, horrible pain, vomiting and nausea and she is being put back onto a total meal replacement again for the second time in two years. This is when you are fed through your arm from a bag for 12 hours a night.

What Monica needs

Monica is a truly compassionate person with a beautiful soul. She has dedicated her life to the needs of others, including, as a single mother, her two children who love her deeply.

This is our opportunity, collectively, to show that karma is not just a concept. Karma is something that we can act upon. Monica, without a doubt, deserves our help. The question is: will you help?

She needs to raise $106,488 at a minimum to cover medical bills this year. We’re asking the amazing environmental community to help, either by financially contributing to her GoFundMe page, or simply by spreading the word to your friends and community in order to raise the finances needed to help Monica.

Please consider sharing Monica’s GoFundMe page through your social media account, whether it’s through Instagram Stories or a tweet to the link.

Monica is extremely grateful for any support you can offer, whether it's financial or in sharing her story. She has done so much for the world, that the least we feel we can do is to share her story far and wide.
