Monika’s Story of Hope
This is the journey of a remarkable woman who has been a cherished part of my life for over 15 years, a woman whose kindness, strength, and unwavering spirit have touched countless lives. Monika Guzdek, a devoted 41-year-old single mother, shares an unbreakable bond with her nearly 17-year-old son, Matteo. She is also the beloved only child of her devoted parents, Grace and Derek.
Monika is an extraordinary woman who embodies grace, determination, and an unshakable will to succeed. As a mother, she has always put Matteo first, striving to give him the best life possible. Her creativity shines through her passion for painting, while her perseverance is evident in her completion of marathons and Ironman races, proving time and again that she is a true fighter. In the workplace, she is more than just valued; she is cherished, playing an integral role with unwavering dedication.
A Life-Altering Diagnosis
But Monika’s life took a devastating and unexpected turn during the pandemic. What began as a routine Pap test led to the discovery of aggressive cancer, shattering her world. In November 2023, she underwent a full hysterectomy as a preventative measure, but during surgery, doctors found a tumor, the cancer had already spread to her lymph nodes, advancing to Stage 3C.
What followed was a grueling battle, six months of intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She endured excruciating side effects, nausea, pain, severe weight loss, hair loss, and even hospitalization due to complications. Yet, through it all, she never gave up.
Shortly after completing her final round of chemotherapy in June 2024, doctors discovered that while a tumor remained, the cancer had cleared from her lymph nodes, a promising sign. With hope for a cure, they recommended six weeks of radiation therapy alongside additional chemotherapy. Witnessing Monika endure these treatments was heartbreaking. The grueling side effects led to yet another hospitalization, this time due to complications from a hemorrhage. Yet, despite it all, she remained unwavering in her determination to reclaim her life.
A Glimmer of Hope - Then Another Heartbreaking Setback
After completing radiation, Monika received hopeful news. An August scan confirmed that her lymph nodes remained cancer-free, and only a small amount of cancer remained in her tumor, expected to resolve with the treatment she had undergone. As she slowly recovered, she began reclaiming her life, exercising again, rediscovering her love for painting and baking, and embracing the simple joys she had missed. With her hair growing back and her energy returning, she found herself with a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh outlook on life.
But just as she believed the battle was behind her, life delivered another devastating setback.
A few months ago, Monika discovered swollen lymph nodes. Hoping it was merely a side effect of radiation, she underwent a PET scan. The results were devastating, the aggressive cancer had not only returned but had spread from her pelvis to her chest.
To make matters worse, doctors informed her that the public healthcare system could offer no further treatment options. With its limited treatment plans and one-size-fits-all approach, the system does not provide access to the latest targeted therapies or personalized treatments that could address her specific cancer. Instead, patients like Monika are essentially sent home with no alternatives, apart from the possibility of enrolling in risky clinical trials, options that are often uncertain, difficult to access, and not tailored to their individual needs.
The Fight Is Not Over
But Monika refuses to accept this fate. She is determined to fight, not just for herself, but for her son and for others facing the same battle. She wants to be a beacon of hope and share this with the world, proving that even in the darkest moments, there is a path forward.
After extensive research and connecting with cancer survivors who were once in her position, she has discovered a path forward. Her last hope lies in advanced genetic testing, which can identify targeted treatments tailored to her specific cancer. Alongside this, she is pursuing alternative therapies, including the Gerson Therapy, a holistic approach that has helped many in her situation.
This treatment plan involves IV infusions, naturopathic care, low-dose chemotherapy, acupuncture, organic juicing, and more. Unfortunately, none of these options are covered by public or private insurance, and the financial burden is overwhelming, especially as she fights the battle of her life.
