Willkommen und Guten Tag!
As many of you may know by now, I am studying abroad in Germany for the 2015-2016 school year. When I started college, it was a goal of mine since the beginning to study abroad, at least for a semester. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that I would be blessed with the opportunity to study abroad for an entire school year.
Why Germany? Where will you be studying? Do you even speak German? Are you going to be learning in German? Why for a year? Are you going to come back at all? Aren't you going to miss everyone? How am I going to talk to you while you're there? Every single time I tell someone new about the fact that I'll be going abroad, I am instantly asked at least one, if not all, of these questions.
Why Germany? My mom's dad was born in Germany and came to America in 1955, celebrating his 21st birthday on the long boat ride over to Ellis Island in New York. I will be celebrating my 21st birthday while I'm in Germany, coincidence? I have family that lives there and I have always felt connected to the country because of this.
Where will you be studying? For the first semester, I will be studying at the University of Tübingen and for the second semester, I have a few options as to where I can go, depending on my development with the language. No matter what school I choose, it will be in Baden-Württemberg. This is in the southwest of Germany, which is very close to France and Switzerland.
Do you even speak German? Are you going to be learning in German? I have been taking German for the past 3 years at Cal State Fullerton. Over the summer and the first semester, I will only be taking German classes. This will prepare me to take my classes in German for the second semester.
Why for a year? Are you going to come back at all? Aren't you going to miss everyone? I want to go for a year because a semester seems like too short of a stay. I want to experience the culture, the lifestyle, and every aspect of the German culture. Also, the German schooling system is shifted compared to the American system. Instead of having semesters roughly from August-December and February-June, the semesters are from October-February and April-July. I don't plan on coming back during the year (flights are kinda expensive). And of course I'm going to miss everyone! But life and adventure isn't going to experience itself, so that's where I come in.
How am I going to talk to you while you're there? TECHNOLOGY! Or write me a letter! E-mail, Facebook, Skype, trust me, we will find a way!
Now this is where I need your help! I am trying to pay for as much of this trip as I can. But I would love it if you could also support me on this. I'm asking for anything that you can do to help, everything is immensely appreciated! If you would like to send it by mail instead, please email me for my address. ([email redacted])
Thank you all in advance. For your kind words, well-wishes, support, donations, prayers, and thoughts. All of these are helping me prepare to go to Germany for a year!
Dankeschön!
