Adventure to help cool earth!
TL;DR: We're riding the wrong bikes, on the right roads to raise money for cool earth. All travel will be carbon offset, so please help us out!
Adventure: An undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks.
That's how the good people at Meriem Webster describe it... and given they write the dictionary, it's probably right.
So does traveling up to 1000 miles (~1600km) across Morocco with your best mate sound like an adventure? To some people, maybe.
What about if you do that journey on motorcycles? I'd say a few more people would call that an Adventure.
If you're a biker, or you've seen the likes of 'Long Way Round' or 'Long Way Down' you're probably picturing big adventure motorcycles, the finest in german engineering, designed specifically for this purpose.
So does it qualify as an adventure if instead of the aforementioned bikes, you do the trip on something a little less suitable... A bike that costs £1000 brand new... That has an engine that is 24 times smaller... That is basically a kid's bike with a number plate... That is the finest Chinese copy of a 50 year old Honda design?
I'd hazard a guess that most people would call that an Adventure. Still not convinced?
Well imagine that you need to do that trip, on that bike, completely un-assisted and with no pre-planned route. You're given a start point (Merzouga, in the Sahara) and an end point (Marrakesh) and a date (26 October).
After that it's just you and your mate, on your tiny, shitty, bikes going in (hopefully...) the right direction!
This 'little' adventure is called The Monkey Run, and it is organised by a fine group of people called the adventurists. If you want to learn a bit more about it, click here.
So why would any sane person want to do this? Ride through hundreds and hundreds of miles of inhospitable terrain, through deserts, over mountains on a motorcycle that can fit in the boot of your average hatchback and has a top speed of 40mph?
As Mark Twain once said... "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
It's a bit long winded, and more about boats than bikes, but you get the idea.
Adventure is all well and good, but as we know, this big old ball of rock we call home is in danger, climate change and deforestation are major issues we face as a planet
So what does this have to do with adventures on tiny motorcycles? The reason (aside from masochism…er, I mean adventure) that we do this is to help the planet, specifically through a charity called Cool Earth
So who are they and what do they do? Cool Earth is the charity that works alongside indigenous villages all over the world to halt rainforest destruction. They do this by putting local people back in control, giving them the resources they need to keep their forests intact. You can read more about them by visiting their website here.
They have already helped to save 216,402,960 trees… that is an awful lot, but we can help them do more. This is where you come in.
If you think this sounds like a very stupid idea and you’d love to see the fun and exciting ways in which we injure our pride and our bodies… or you think Cool Earth’s mission sounds like a noble one then click the donate button above.
100% of the donations you make will go directly to cool earth, So all you need to do now is; throw a couple of pounds their way, and then come October, sit back and watch the hilarity of two grown men, on two tiny bikes take on the Sahara!
